Four-star Sumner safety Tristan Dunn flips, commits to UW

Sumner High School senior safety Tristan Dunn has flipped his commitment, verbally committing to the University of Washington. He announced his commitment in a Twitter post on Tuesday afternoon, a day before National Signing Day. Dunn had previously been committed to Arizona State.

Dunn is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound safety. He’s considered a four-star recruit by 247sports.com, the fifth-ranked player in Washington in the 2022 class and the No. 23 safety nationally.

He was a first-team selection to The News Tribune’s 2021 All-Area team last fall, after helping Sumner to a 10-2 record and a Class 4A state tournament appearance. Longtime Spartans coach Keith Ross calls him a “tackling missile shot out of a cannon.” He was the 4A South Puget Sound League’s defensive player of the year in the fall, known for his elite speed and hard-hitting.

“He’s the best tracker and hitter I have ever coached,” Ross said.

Dunn can play a variety of positions, though his skill set and currently measurables suggest he’ll fit in well at safety at UW. If he adds some size to his frame, he could potentially make the move to outside linebacker, as well.

“There’s not many kids who have zero fear,” Ross told The News Tribune during the 2021 spring season. “He’s one of them. … There’s fast guys, and then there’s guys who can run in football uniforms, too. He just looks even faster on the field. He just runs by people that aren’t slow.”

Dunn prides himself on being a physical hitter.

“I try to be a well-rounded player,” Dunn said, also during the spring season. “I was always taught to go at full speed, and that’s how you’re going to not get hurt. Having that dog mentality is what I’ve developed, never being scared of any man across from you. It’s good to know that if you come across the middle against me, you’re going to feel it.”
