UPSET ALERT
The 4A SPSL South sent two teams to the Tacoma Dome, and both picked up first-round victories Wednesday — in back-to-back games. Olympia, which won the division championship earlier this winter, opened the set of four 4A games on the boys court by upsetting Mariner, 50-41, to return to the quarterfinals for a second straight tournament. Less than two hours later, Graham-Kapowsin — in the state tournament for the first time in school history — posted a dominant, 65-47, win over Davis to move on. The Eagles entered the week as the bracket’s lowest remaining seed, but their 18-point winning margin was the highest of the four first-round contests. The Bears move on to meet No. 5 Tahoma for a second time this season in the quarterfinals, while the Eagles have a daunting opponent ahead in top-seeded Mount Si in the following game.

Wednesday’s games featured two players headed to the Pac-12 next season in Bilodeau and Stevens, who are both committed to Oregon State. Both paced their teams to first-round wins with perfect shooting marks inside the perimeter. Bilodeau scored his 28 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the floor — his lone miss was from 3-point range — and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Stevens was a perfect 9-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-4 on free throw attempts to finish with 21. For those doing the math, the Corvallis-bound seniors shot a combined 95 percent from the floor and 85 percent from the line.

Camas grabbed a double-digit lead in the second half, then held off a Bellarmine Prep rally late to advance. The Papermakers were paced by Jamison’s double-double — the sophomore pulled down the most rebounds of any player in the Tacoma Dome in the opening round — another 15 points and three assists from guard Keirra Thompson and 14 more boards from Kendall Mairs.

Lake Stevens and Rogers played the only overtime contest in any of the four Tacoma Dome tournaments early Wednesday afternoon. The game was also one of only two overtime contests of the 48 games played across the state Wednesday. (Freeman upended King’s in overtime in the 1A girls tournament in Yakima in the other game that needed extra time to be decided.) The Rams were on the verge of an upset, leading 35-33 with 11.7 seconds left following a clutch steal and transition layup by Tel. But, Baylor Thomas answered moments later at the other end to force overtime, and the Vikings eventually closed out a 41-37 win to advance.

UPSET ALERT
In a matchup of 3A Metro League teams, Eastside Catholic pulled of the first upset win of the day Wednesday with their 48-44 win over O’Dea. Lamebull-Ingram — who finished with a team-high 11 points — hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final quarter to help keep O’Dea out of reach. The Crusaders won both of their meetings with their league rivals this season. Mountlake Terrace later edged Timberline in an intense first-round matchup that featured 13 lead changes and eight ties. Neither team led by more than six points during the contest, but the Hawks eventually edged the Blazers, 65-62, behind Jones’ impressive fourth quarter performance. The sophomore scored 10 of his game-high 22 points in the final 4:15 to send Mountlake Terrace to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2013.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Metro League has crowned a state champion in each of the past nine tournaments — and eight of those games have featured two teams from the Seattle league playing for the title. Mount Spokane, which advanced to the final in 2019, is the only team outside of the league to play in the championship game in the past decade. The last time a championship game in this bracket didn’t include a team from the always-tough league was 2011, when Lakes routed Bellevue for the title. Five Metro League teams advanced to the Tacoma Dome this year, and four are still playing. Eastside Catholic and Rainier Beach both won first-round games Wednesday, while Garfield and Seattle Prep each play for the first time in the tournament in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

UPSET ALERT
Behind Simmons’ impressive production at both ends of the floor, Hermiston pulled off a 57-46 upset of Kelso in the program’s first-ever game in the Tacoma Dome. The Hilanders were shorthanded in the loser-out contest, missing Utah State-bound leading scorer Natalie Fraley, who injured her knee during last weekend’s regional round. In the final game of the day on the girls court, O’Connor’s stellar outing, paired with double-digit performances from teammates Mia Broom (20 points) and Hannah Dickinson (16), helped Lakeside slip by Lincoln. The Abes were the only Tacoma Public Schools program in the tournament.

Hermiston, which is located just south of the Washington-Oregon border near the Tri-Cities, made history Wednesday afternoon becoming the first Oregon-based school to win a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association state basketball game with the victory over Kelso. The Bulldogs joined the WIAA in 2018 to play in the nearby 4A/3A Mid-Columbia Conference.
