Who stood out Friday at the Tacoma Dome? Top performers, upsets from Day 3 of the 4A and 3A state basketball championships
The Class 4A and 3A boys and girls state basketball tournaments continued Friday with the semifinals, setting up championship Saturday.
Here’s a tournament-by-tournament glance at some of the highlights from the eight semifinals matchups and eight consolation games inside the Tacoma Dome.

UPSET ALERT
There were no semifinals shakeups in this bracket. Both undefeated defending state champion Mount Si and Curtis made their way through to meet in Saturday afternoon’s title game. The Wildcats have won each of their 25 games this season, while the Vikings are on a 20-game winning streak and haven’t lost to a team in 4A. These two programs last met in the 2019 state semifinals, with Mount Si moving on to the first of its three consecutive championship appearances. The Wildcats lost in the title game that season to Gonzaga Prep, but routed Central Valley in the most recent tournament in 2020 for the school’s second championship. Curtis is also seeking a third title in program history, and is back in the final for the first time since 2013, when the Vikings topped Jackson in the championship game.
DID YOU KNOW?
Two future Pac-12 teammates — Oregon state commits Bilodeau and Stevens — went head-to-head for a second time in a consolation game Friday afternoon. Bilodeau led Kamiakin to the trophy round with his 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting, and sunk all six of his free throw attempts. Stevens scored his game-high 20 points on efficient 8-of-15 shooting and made each of his three shots from the foul line. Entering Saturday, Stevens’ three-game point total of 67 was leading the 4A tournament, while Bilodeau’s 61 points were right behind. The two played against each other for the first time in their high school careers earlier this season in the 4A District 8 championship game, each leading their team with 19 points. Gonzaga Prep won that meeting on a half-court buzzer-beater.

UPSET ALERT
No upsets in the semifinals here either. The bracket’s top two seeds in returning 4A runner-up Woodinville and Sumner advanced to meet in title game — meaning this tournament will crown a first-time champion Saturday evening. The Falcons, on a 25-game winning streak since dropping their only loss in their season-opener, are looking to finally secure a title after advancing to the final twice before in the past three tournaments. They were upended by Central Valley both times in 2018 and 2020. Sumner is in the Tacoma Dome for the first time in school history, and looks to wrap up a stellar season — the Spartans have won their past 23 games played, with that stretch being broken up only by a forfeit in January — with its first championship trophy.
DID YOU KNOW?
The 3-pointers were flying throughout the day on the girls court, and Camas broke the record Friday for the most 3-pointers made by a 4A girls team in a state tournament history in the four-game format (1974-2010, 2017-present). The Papermakers added 12 3-pointers in Friday’s consolation win over Lake Stevens, and have 31 so far for the tournament — breaking both the current-era record (27) set by Issaquah in 2020 and the previous four-game format record (28) set by Woodinville in 2008 — with one game to play. Camas also broke the single-game record with its 12 baskets from the perimeter, which was set by Chiawana (11) in 2020.

UPSET ALERT
No upsets in the semifinals here either. Auburn dug in to grind out a win over Seattle Prep — in the lowest scoring effort by both teams this season — and Rainier Beach rallied by Mount Spokane in the second half to set up Saturday night’s final. The Trojans are in the championship game for the first time, looking to wrap up their first title behind a seasoned group of senior guards. The Vikings are in the final for the 14th time, and seeking to add their 10th title.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Trojans will have to get by a third consecutive 3A Metro League team if they are to secure their first state title. Auburn edged top seed and previously undefeated defending state champion Garfield in the quarterfinals Thursday, and then Seattle Prep on Friday to set up the meeting with Rainier Beach. The Metro League has won each of the past nine tournaments since Lakes, as a 3A SPSL member, won the 3A title in 2011. During this decade stretch, Rainier Beach has won the most championships with four, while Garfield has won three and Nathan Hale and O’Dea one apiece.

UPSET ALERT
Lake Washington held on late to knock previously undefeated top-seeded Mead out of title contention Friday evening. The Kangaroos had a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Mead rallied in the final 3:29 to cut the lead to one possession in the closing moments. The Panthers had possession with 16 seconds left, but Lake Washington’s 6-foot-4 forward Hani forced a contested final shot underneath the basket at the buzzer. Lake Washington’s win sets up a 2020 title-game rematch with defending champion Garfield, which advanced with a win over Arlington. This is Lake Washington’s third trip to the final, though the Kangaroos are still seeking their first win. The Bulldogs look to add a fifth title in their seventh appearance.

Two teams playing in the consolation bracket tied 3A tournament team records for 3-pointers made in back-to-back contests Friday morning. Snohomish tied the tournament record for single-game 3-pointers with 12 in its win over Lakeside, matching the record set by Mount Spokane in 2016. Stanwood then made 9-of-17 attempts from 3-point range in the first half against Hermiston to tie the current era record for 3-pointers in a tournament with 24 so far, matching the production by Mercer Island in 2017 and Prairie in 2019.
