High school volleyball: The News Tribune’s 2022 All-Area team
First- and second-team selections for The News Tribune’s 2022 All-Area volleyball team.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Hailey Brockway, Graham-Kapowsin, sr. — 4A SPSL South MVP led the Eagles to a division championship and the first 4A state title in program history this fall, tallying 551 kills, 39 aces, 21 blocks and 213 digs and 17 assists in 86 sets. Also named the 4A state player of the year by the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association. Brockway earned league MVP honors all four seasons at Graham-Kapowsin. Four-time TNT All-Area selection and three-time player of the year. Illinois State commit.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Loni Parks, Graham-Kapowsin — 4A SPSL South coach of the year guided the Eagles to a 21-4 record, division title and the first state championship win in program history this season. Also named 4A state coach of the year by WSVCA.
FIRST TEAM
OUTSIDE HITTERS
Ivy Brown, Silas, jr. — 3A PCL MVP led Silas to the 3A state tournament, pacing the Rams with 368 kills and 55 aces, and added 26 blocks and 214 digs in 80 sets.
Layne Dent, Cascade Christian, soph. — 1A Nisqually first-team selection led the Cougars with 451 kills, and added 68 aces, 31 blocks, 276 digs and 13 assists in 85 sets. Cascade Christian reached the 1A state semifinals and secured a fourth-place finish.
Ella Ensign, Curtis, sr. — 4A SPSL North first-teamer was the Vikings’ go-to player on the court, and tallied a team-leading 494 kills, while adding 45 aces, 18 blocks, 289 digs and 12 assists in 105 sets to pace Curtis to a fifth-place finish in the 4A state tournament. Also named to the 4A all-state second team by WSVCA. Two-time TNT All-Area selection. Cal State Bakersfield beach volleyball commit.
Langley Griffin, Peninsula, sr. — 3A SSC MVP led the Seahawks to league and district titles, and a fifth-place finish in the 3A state tournament. Paced Peninsula with 299 kills, and added 40 aces, 21 blocks, 307 digs and 46 assists in 80 sets. Also named to the 3A all-state first team by WSVCA. Two-time TNT All-Area selection.
Sirena Peredo, Washington, sr. — 2A SPSL MVP led Washington to league and district titles, and a sixth-place finish in the 2A state tournament. Had a team-leading 303 kills and 242 digs, and added 25 aces, 22 blocks and 24 assists across 58 sets. Also named to the 2A all-state first team by WSVCA. Three-time TNT All-Area selection.
Ivy Vindivich, Puyallup, sr. — 4A SPSL North first-teamer helped lead Puyallup to undefeated division and district titles, and an eventual third-place finish in the 4A state tournament. Led the Vikings’ attack with 392 kills, and added 40 aces, 14 blocks and 208 digs across 102 sets. Also named to the 4A all-state second team by WSVCA. Two-time TNT All-Area selection. South Dakota Mines commit.
MIDDLE BLOCKERS
Danielle Brown, Puyallup, jr. — 4A SPSL North first-team selection led the Vikings with 113 blocks on the way to undefeated division and district titles, and an eventual third-place finish in the 4A state tournament. Also had 301 kills, 51 aces, 44 digs and 15 assists in 107 sets. Also named to the 4A all-state first team by WSVCA. Two-time TNT All-Area selection. Santa Clara commit.
Isabella Burney, Tumwater, sr. — 2A EvCo MVP is a natural middle blocker but played mostly at outside hitter this year to help the T-Birds succeed. Still led the team with 33 blocks and racked up 201 kills, 24 aces and 88 digs, thanks to her strong vertical leap and positional versatility.
Rae Wartelle, Annie Wright, sr. — 1A Nisqually first-team selection and 1A all-state first-team selection by WSVCA had an unmatched court presence and athleticism for the Gators, leading Annie Wright to a second-place finish in the 1A state tournament. Middle hitter racked up 140 kills, 25 aces, 36 blocks and 125 digs. Connecticut College commit.
SETTERS
Alyna Brown, Mount Rainier, sr. — 4A NPSL MVP and 4A all-state first-team selection by WSVCA tallied 402 assists, 57 kills, 31 aces and 78 digs, leading Mount Rainier to the 4A state semifinals and a fourth-place finish.
Peyton Ensign, Curtis, soph. — 4A SPSL North first-team pick and 4A all-state first-team selection by WSVCA racked up 1,035 assists, 55 aces and 284 digs for the Vikings, leading Curtis to the 4A state quarterfinals. Has played every set for Curtis since she stepped on campus as a freshman.
Reese Sheppard, Puyallup, soph. — 4A SPSL North first-team selection and 4A all-state first team selection by WSVCA led the Vikings with 1,163 assists and 67 aces. Also tallied 33 kills, 22 blocks and 251 digs in 100 sets. Helped Puyallup to undefeated division and district titles, and an eventual third-place finish in the 4A state tournament.

Sophia Sheppard, Puyallup, sr. — 4A SPSL North MVP tallied 1,405 career digs for the Vikings, including leading Puyallup to undefeated division and district titles, and an eventual third-place finish in the 4A state tournament with a team-best 386 digs this season. Added 39 aces and 32 assists across 99 sets. Also named to the 4A all-state first team by WSVCA. Three-time TNT All-Area selection. UTEP beach volleyball commit.
