High school girls soccer: The News Tribune’s 2022 All-Area team

First- and second-team selections for The News Tribune’s 2022 All-Area girls soccer team.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Samiah Shell, Auburn Riverside, sr. — The 3A NPSL offensive MVP broke several school records during her career. She leaves as the Ravens’ leader in career goals (80) and assists (59). This season, scored 23 goals and tallied 14 assists, leading Auburn Riverside to a fifth consecutive league title, a district title and the 3A state quarterfinals. In a 6-0 win against Lakes in the opening round of the state tournament, Shell recorded a hat trick. UW commit was also selected to play in the All-American Game in Florida.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Brett Bartlett and John Hayes, Tumwater — Co-coaches led the T-Birds to a 19-1-2 overall record, and 2A EvCo title with a perfect 12-0 mark. Tumwater also won a district championship and earned a third-place finish in the 2A state tournament. Tumwater outscored opponents, 106-11, this season.

FIRST TEAM

FORWARDS

Alyce Chappelle, Rogers, soph. — 4A SPSL first-team selection scored 14 goals and had five assists for a Rams team that reached the 4A district playoffs.

Ari Hill, Sumner, jr. — 4A SPSL offensive player of the year was fast, skilled and consistently beat defenders in one-on-one situations. Tallied 13 goals and seven assists, scoring goals against nearly every league opponent for a Spartans team that advanced to the 4A state tournament.

Samantha Huber, Gig Harbor, sr. — 3A SSC co-offensive MVP had a nonstop motor, always working hard in front of the goal to create chances. Scored 10 goals and notched 13 assists for a Tides team that won a share of the 3A SSC and advanced to the 3A state tournament.

Railee Hutton, Silas, jr. — 3A PCL co-offensive MVP was quick and always a threat in front of the goal, scoring 16 goals and adding three assists for a Rams team that reached the district playoffs.

Morgan Miner, Kentwood, sr. — 4A NPSL first-team selection had a high work rate and was constantly dangerous in front of the goal, scoring 21 goals and adding six assists, leading the Conquerors to the 4A state tournament. Nevada signee.

Emalyn Shaffer, Tumwater, soph. — The 2A EvCo MVP was fast, physical and relentless in the attack for the T-Birds, scoring 25 goals and adding seven assists. Called a true goal-scorer by coach Brett Bartlett — 10 of her goals were in postseason play — Shafer was good in the air and could score with either foot. Tumwater won league and district titles, and earned a third-place finish in the 2A state tournament.

MIDFIELDERS

Sophie Blake, Gig Harbor, jr. — 3A SSC co-offensive MVP was Tides’ playmaker at holding mid, tallying four goals and six assists in Gig Harbor’s run to the 3A state tournament. While stats weren’t gaudy, the UW commit was the engine behind the Tides’ attack.

Stella Demianiw, Peninsula, sr. — Center mid and 3A SSC first-team selection was the heartbeat of Peninsula’s squad, scoring a game-tying goal against rival Gig Harbor in the final seconds of the game. Scored three goals and had four assists this season, leading Peninsula to a share of the league title, an appearance in the district championship game and a spot in the 3A state quarterfinals.

Brooklyn Lee, Stadium, jr. — Played as a wide midfielder and forward for the Tigers this fall, scoring 10 goals and adding 15 assists. A natural outside back, Lee was as dangerous as anyone on the flanks this season for a Stadium team that won the 3A PCL title and reached the district playoffs.

Zoe Markquart, Bonney Lake, sr. — 3A PCL first-team selection could play any position on the field for the Panthers. As a midfielder, scored 22 goals and had 16 assists for a Bonney Lake team that advanced to the 3A state tournament, and was equally dangerous as a scorer and a patient distributor.

Macie Masterson, Tahoma, sr. — 4A NPSL offensive player of the year scored 15 goals and had eight assists for a Bears team that won a league title and advanced to the 4A state quarterfinals.

Elise Miller, Gig Harbor, soph. — 3A SSC first-team selection was dynamic on and off the ball for the Tides during their run to the 3A state tournament. Led Gig Harbor with 18 goals and tallied seven assists.

Ava Morton, Auburn Riverside, jr. — 3A NPSL first-team selection was the head of a defense that allowed 0.4 goals per game. Controlled the midfield and shut down opponent attacks with her speed. The Ravens won a fifth consecutive league title, a district title and advanced to the 3A state quarterfinals. UW commit.

Kaylee Mithun, Fife, sr. — 2A SPSL offensive player of the year had unmatched skill on the ball, scoring prowess and ability to find teammates, scoring 15 goals and had 25 assists for the undefeated league and district champion Trojans, who also advanced to the 2A state tournament. 2A SPSL MVP as a junior.

Aleigha Woodland, Fife, jr. — 2A SPSL MVP scored nine goals and had eight assists for the Trojans, who went undefeated in league, won the district championship and advanced to the 2A state tournament. Coach Ryann Waldman calls her the “hardest worker on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.” An end-to-end, physical midfielder with a strong first touch and good vision.

DEFENDERS

Mia Arellano, Stadium, sr. — 3A PCL defensive MVP led the Tigers to a 3A PCL title and district playoffs appearance. Netted six goals and had three assists from the back line and captained a Stadium defense that pitched seven shutouts. Led Stadium to a 37-8-3 career record in the 3A PCL in her four seasons with the Tigers.

Camryn Brown, Sumner, jr. — 4A SPSL first-team selection was one of the toughest and most consistent defenders in the league, playing every minute of every game. Anchored a young Spartans defense with two freshmen and two sophomores. Sumner advanced to the 4A state tournament.

Mia Cuoio, Tumwater, sr. — 2A EvCo defensive player of the year for Tumwater, which won league and district titles and earned a third-place finish in the 2A state tournament. Center back captained the T-Birds to 15 shutouts and held opponents to 0.45 goals per game. Also scored three goals.

Kali Ginnis, Fife, jr. — 2A SPSL defensive player of the year was the leader on the back line for a Fife squad that gave up only three regular season goals and seven during the season. Added two goals and four assists. The Trojans won undefeated league and district championships, and advanced to the 2A state tournament.

KV Miller, Curtis, sr. — Two-time 4A SPSL defensive player of the year was a four-year starter for the Vikings and a shutdown defender, and led Curtis to the 4A state tournament this season. Added four goals and one assist. Idaho signee.

Addison Stendera, Kentridge, soph. — Center back was the 4A NPSL defensive player of the year, lauded by coach Callie Bergstrom for her leadership in the back, ball control and communication. Scored a pair of goals for a Kentridge team that reached the district playoffs. Member of the U.S. Women’s National team U16 roster.

GOALKEEPER

GK Rory Murry, Auburn Riverside, jr. — 3A NPSL first-team selection recorded 74 saves and posted 14 shutouts, holding opponents to 0.40 goals per game for an Auburn Riverside team that won a fifth consecutive league title, a district title and advanced to the 3A state quarterfinals. Also scored a goal.
