SILAS 70, MOUNT TAHOMA 65 (OT)

Silas forward Romeo Webber dropped an overtime-best five points, helping the Rams outlast league-rival Mount Tahoma on Tuesday night.

The Rams scored 15 points in every quarter, eventually fending off a late surge by the visiting T-Birds.

Mount Tahoma erased a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter to push the game to extra time; six T-Birds scored in the period.

T-Birds guard Javari Harris posted a double-double, including a game-high 19 points (12 rebounds). Mount Tahoma guard Josiah Maxey-Johnson added 12.

Harris shot 7-for-13, draining three of seven shots from beyond the arc.

Silas’ (7-4, 10-8) win pushed the Rams into third place in the 3A PCL standings, a full two games over fourth-place Spanaway Lake.

Tigers sophomore Baaroc Rivers dropped a team-best 18, posting at least three points in each quarter. Standout senior Ne’Quan Brown added 16.

Bonney Lake’s Shaun Burton, a senior guard, dropped 19 points to best all scorers.

The Tigers (8-4, 13-6) widened a comfortable cushion for a second-place finish in the 3A PCL. Lincoln (9-1, 14-6) clinched the league title last week.

ANNIE WRIGHT 64, VASHON ISLAND 34

The last time the Golden Gators and Pirates played each other, Vashon Island held a very slim 18-17 lead heading into the half. Annie Wright rallied and was able to knock off their league rivals 52-36.

It was a very different game in their second meeting as the Golden Gators left no doubt as they turned a 34-9 halftime score into a 64-34 final score.

Sophomores Martin Kaupanger and Jeremiah Harshman led their team each with 14 and 12 points respectively on the night. Both players didn’t need to put up big scoring numbers either, as first-year head coach Dom Williams has the entire team putting up points. In fact, 11 out of his 12 players scored.

“I’ve been preaching teamwork and playing the whole 32 minutes. Defensively, the guys have been not giving up anything easy. They are dialed in,” Williams said. “I think we have a lot of guys that can score and be unselfish. We are very balanced. There are multiple games where there are different leading scorers. I am definitely excited, happy, and proud of the guys. They are responding really well and our team chemistry is building every game.”

Junior Finn Hawkins led all the Pirates’ scores with 10, and junior Reid Stromberg followed up with 7.

Annie Wright (13-0, 16-1) continues their undefeated stretch in the 1A Nisqually with the win.

LINCOLN 63, LAKES 23

The Abes dominated the Lancers in every part of their game, despite a slow offensive start. After five minutes of not scoring in the game, senior Simani Thomas and junior Jaleigha Robinson sparked their team.

Putting on a full court press, Lincoln pressured Lakes into making mistakes and not getting any offensive rhythm going. Thomas’ defense in particular held Lancers like sophomore Samara Oliver and senior Desirae Campos to five points each. What’s even more impressive for the Abes is that they were playing great with a few backups in the lineup as well.

Senior Malani Warren got some crucial three-pointers for Lincoln in the first quarter to rally her team. Along with junior Deandrea Woods-Singleton, who added in 11 for herself, both players fulfilled their tasks of picking up the scoring slack that the Abes were missing.

“We didn’t want Lakes to be comfortable. They have a couple of guards who could control the flow of the game. So we defended baseline to baseline and we created some havoc,” said coach Jamila Jones. “There was a great spark off the bench from [sophomore] Savannah So. She hit a couple three’s for us. It’s good to see her settling in and getting things figured out after coming off an ACL tear.”

With their win, Lincoln improved to 11-0 in the 3A PCL and 15-3 overall. Leading them in the scorebook was Warren’s 22. So also knocked in 11 to round out the top scoring.

For the Lancers, Oliver’s and Campos’ five points led the team, with senior Dy’Naizha Silvera chipping in five as well.

The Abes will wrap up their regular season with a bout against Spanaway Lake at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, January 26 at Spanaway Lake High School.

CURTIS 81, ROGERS 36

The Vikings proved relentless early and often, pushing Wednesday’s tilt at Rogers toward blowout status.

A trio of Viking guards combined for 56 points, ballooning Curtis’ lead to 30 before halftime. Junior standout Zoom Diallo dropped a game-high 21, all from the field. Tyce Paulsen added 19, followed by Cinque Maxwell’s 16.

Five Rams posted five or more points, led by freshman guard Raylen Rigney’s seven.

Curtis (11-1, 17-3) earlier clinched the SPSL North; Wednesday’s win only strengthened its grasp in the standings, now 4 1/2 games over second-place Sumner (6-5, 9-9).

PUYALLUP 65, SUMNER 54

The Vikings took the second matchup in the hardwood edition of the Battle of the Valley, sweeping their regular season matchups against the Spartans.

Puyallup came out aggressive to the basket, taking on the physical Sumner defense head on. They took a 30-22 lead into halftime, despite being out-rebounded by the Spartans.

“It was a physical game. We got to the free throw line and shot a good percentage. They were struggling from the field, and we took advantage of them,” said coach Kevin Olson. “We have our number one scorer in [junior] Isaiah Sonntag, we know he’s going to get the opportunities out there. [Sophomore] Drew Jones sets up guys and can score as well. Our best games are when we get lots of scoring from these guys.”

Even though Sumner came out in the second half firing and making several three-pointers in a row, the Vikings eventually slowed their roll again. Puyallup forced the Spartans to keep shooting from the outside and not let them in the middle, making the shots harder in the process.

As Sumner slowed down, the Vikings heated up as they outscored their opponents 24-13 in the final period. Offensively, Puyallup had four players reach double digit scoring, led by Sonntag’s 16 points. Jones chipped in 15, junior Carsen Lovett had 13 and freshman Lawson Looker had 10.

Senior Jaivion McLaughlin led the Spartans with 15. Senior Kaden Kastberg and junior Eli Nordline each had 10.

The Bears amassed a double-digit lead before halftime and held off Emerald Ridge, propelled by 22 points from Washington State commit Parker Gerrits.

The standout senior logged the game’s highest scoring total on 6-of-10 shooting. Nine Olympia players scored in the contest; five Bears scored at least five points.

Senior forward Marquis Robinson paced Emerald Ridge scorers with 12. Junior guard Tony Harste added 11.

Olympia (11-1, 17-3) earlier clinched the SPSL South and further solidified its cushion atop the standings Wednesday.

EMERALD RIDGE 53, OLYMPIA 50

With about a minute and a half left in the game and down 50-49, Jaguars freshman Ryah McGriff got fouled and took a trip to the free throw line. The Bears took a 30 second timeout, so coach Arvin Mosely brought his squad together on the sidelines.

After a brief and encouraging conversation, McGriff took to the line. The freshman not only knocked in her first free throw to tie it up but made the second to take the 51-50 lead.

“My exact words to her were ‘when you make these free throws, let’s get back to the other end and play some solid defense’,” Mosely said. “There was never a moment of ‘if we make it, then this will happen’. We are a team that has lots of belief, not one of the girls batted an eye when I told [McGriff] she was going to make both her free throws. Through it all, we are trusting each other.”

After McGriff made her free throws, Olympia came back down the court trying to take the lead back. A missed shot led to senior Alina Sapilak grabbing the ball and getting fouled in the process for Emerald Ridge. Sapilak toed the line and made both of her free throws, giving the Jaguars their permanent 53-50 lead.

Earlier in the game, Emerald Ridge had stretched their lead out to 11 points. That’s when the Bears dug their heels in defensively and began a bit of a comeback. The last 10 minutes of the game, they did not feel rattled by the pressure the Jaguars put on them.

Olympia got their good looks, and ran Emerald Ridge off the three-point line to get rebounds. But in the end, it was the missed free throws for the Bears, and the made free throws for the Jaguars that decided this game.

Leading Emerald Ridge was senior Monique Carter’s 15 points, with junior Naomi Senato chipping in 11 and senior Tami Gallo putting in eight. Olympia’s scoring leaders were sophomore Lauren Juergens with 15 and senior Natalia McBride with 14.

PENINSULA 59, NORTH THURSTON 37

A duo of Peninsula guards went for 20-plus, powering the Seahawks over league-foe North Thurston on Wednesday night.

Junior Kaylia Heidelberg, 25 points, and sophomore Grace Richardson, 20, outpaced the Rams themselves. They accounted for more than 3/4 of the Seahawks offense and out-dueled North Thurston’s sophomore Soraya Ogaldez, responsible for a team-high 17.

Heidelberg put Peninsula ahead early with 11 points in the first quarter before Richardson added nine points in the third.

Ogaldez sunk a trio of threes and posted 10 points in the first quarter.

The win kept Peninsula in control of its own destiny for the SSC crown. The Seahawks remain tied with Gig Harbor atop the standings but own a head-to-head tiebreaker.

Peninsula’s home matchup with Gig Harbor on Feb. 3 could determine the league champion.

GIG HARBOR 54, TIMBERLINE 50

The Tides edged out a narrow victory over the Blazers to earn their sixth win in the last seven games. And although it was a bit too close for comfort, the trio of seniors Olivia Paul, Riley Peschek and junior Taylor Schwab shined for Gig Harbor.

Holding a two-point lead with less than a minute left in the game, Schwab was fouled and then was sent to the free throw line for the Tides. Knocking down the two shots she had, the junior guard iced the game and sealed the win for Gig Harbor.

It was a hard fought game though as the defense, who had been giving up some crucial turnovers throughout the night, toughened up against Timberline’s last drive at the very end.

“I thought it was too close for comfort. We had too many turnovers,” said coach Mike Guinasso. “Timberline is going to play hard. We turned it over and let them stay in the game with these extra opportunities. The defense is still working on a few things since it is a little new, but we ran the defense pretty well. [Riley] Peschek is averaging a double double and she probably had like 20 rebounds tonight.”

Peschek was a force for the Tides as not only did she have 15 points on the night, she also came down with 25 boards in the game. Her rebounds helped give way to her teammates Paul also scoring 15 and Schwab netting 13 in the game.

Holding their composure under pressure and until the final buzzer, the win helped Gig Harbor remain tied with Peninsula atop the 3A SSC with a 10-1 league record.

The 3A PCL champions won their third straight, powered by a consistent scoring attack that produced 20-plus points in three quarters and outlasted Spanaway Lake on Thursday night.

Johnson shot three-of-four from beyond the arc. Senior forward Ezeshaiya Sayovong netted a pair of threes in the first quarter.

SILAS 69, BONNEY LAKE 63

The Rams pulled out the road win in a very hostile environment where the Panthers were celebrating senior night. However, they embraced their motto of “Ramily” and stormed back for the victory.

Trailing 17-13 after the first quarter, Bonney Lake found their rhythm and momentum and turned in a big second quarter. They outscored Silas by seven points to take a 36-33 lead into halftime.

However, the second half was owned by the Rams. They got key buckets from players like senior Keon Dewalt and junior Tre Walker down the stretch to take the lead back from the Panthers. By the fourth quarter, Silas had completely shifted the game to their favor, and more key buckets from senior Jayden McDaniels sealed the deal for Silas.

“They were riding with great momentum. We ran our system and made some big buckets down the stretch,” said coach Eric Overgaard. “We went into our full court man to man press defense and put some pressure on their ball handlers. [Walker] had a couple of big steals down the stretch, and [senior] Taveonte Webster had a couple of big blocks. The guys pretty much started buying into our coaching and shut out the outside voices, and now we are ready to see what we can do in the playoffs.”

Dewalt was the Rams’ leading scorer with 17 on the night, and Walker came up behind him with 15. For the Panthers, their leading scorers were seniors Shaun Burton and Kole Kimball, each with 21 and 13 respectively.

The win helps Silas solidify their “Ramily” mantra. A rocky start to the season with players leaving the team has turned around to a 8-4 season in the 3A PCL and a 11-8 season overall.

LINCOLN 66, SPANAWAY LAKE 41

Despite some early foul trouble by the Abes, they were able to course correct and cruise to their fourth-straight win and eighth out of their last nine games.

Junior Deandrea Woods-Singleton had an incredible game. She earned a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. She even got six blocks in for good measure. Senior Malani Warren led all scores by dropping 26 on the night, including going six-for-14 from behind the three-point line.

“[Woods-Singleton] was relentless on the boards, she had lots of offensive rebounds,” said coach Jamila Jones. “Anytime she’s active on the boards, we end up really good on the night. [Junior] Jaleigha Robinson also had a great game. It’s huge for us to rely on our players who don’t normally start. That’s always been my deal, everyone has to find a way to contribute. Our players are doing really well at finding their niche.”

Robinson’s night can be characterized as being everywhere at once. She may not have had the flashiest of numbers, but she had her hands on the ball in all facets of the game. The junior guard came away with six points, six rebounds, five assists, and five steals.

The hardest thing for Lincoln to combat was finding an answer for the Sentinels’ senior Atreonia Garner. She lit up the scoreboard for Spanaway Lake, scoring 25 and giving the Abes fits all night long.

With their win, Lincoln sits atop the 3A PCL with a perfect 12-0 league record and 16-3 record overall.

The Eagles poured it on against the Conquerors.

Up 56-11 at the half, there was plenty of strong offense and defense coming from Federal Way.

“Everything was working, I think the score doesn’t reflect how good of a team Kentwood is,” said coach Yattah Reed. “We made them take tough shots, that was our goal. Our guys did a great job at holding them to one shot as well. It was one of those bad nights for Kentwood. They’ll bounce back and be the team they usually are.”

The T-Birds ended the third period on a 12-2 run, which turned a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead.

Tumwater’s Luke Reid sunk his fourth three-pointer and forced a Bearcats timeout with 6:51 remaining in the contest; the senior guard finished with 16.

Senior forward Andrew Collins paced Tumwater scorers with 22 (10-of-13 shooting) and matched Gunnar Harroun’s team-best six rebounds.

Tumwater senior guard Luke Brewer dished a team-high five assists and notched 15 points.

ANNIE WRIGHT 78, LIFE CHRISTIAN 38

Just about everything that could go right for the Golden Gators did as they did not stop scoring against the Eagles. Their play on the court was so efficient that they held a 51-14 lead heading into halftime.

The game started off with a quick 4-4 tie. Coach Dom Williams called an early timeout and talked through the adjustments that his team would need to make. Players like sophomores Martin Kaupange and Jeremiah Harshman, and freshman Amare Breaalove took those adjustments to heart and their offense took off.

“Defensively, we had a lot of help protecting the paint as much as possible,” Williams said. “Everyday I tell them to build better habits. They need to lock in and listen because you never know what the opponent is going to throw at you.”

Although their offense was not as prolific as it was in the first half, Anne Wright still outscored Life Christian Academy 27-24 in the second half. Breealove led all scores with 15 in the contest. Behind him was Harshman with 14 and Kaupanger with 13.

The only player from Life Christian to crack double digit scoring was freshman Darius Imperial with 12 points for the Eagles.

EMERALD RIDGE 69, ROGERS 29

The Jaguars closed out their regular season with a rout against the Rams. Getting some big baskets from the bench and their suffocating defense allowing for very few second chances, Emerald Ridge left very little doubt who was going to win.

Junior Naomi Senato had a big night for the Jaguars, as she scored a game-high 17 points. Nine of those points came off three second-half 3-pointers. That level of shooting was matched by senior Tami Gallo, who also netted three 3-pointers.

“We pressured the heck out of them. Our offense had lots of transition baskets and we were hot from the three-point line,” said coach Arvin Mosely. “We had two girls off the bench get three 3-pointers. Our defense did a great job putting pressure on Rogers. We really blocked them out and gave very little chances to get rebounds.”

Getting in on the action for the Jaguars also was freshman Ryah McGriff and senior Maya Bennett, both scoring 10 themselves. For the Rams, sophomore Zailyn Paranada scored 11 and senior Divinity Singleton put up 10. Together they scored 21 of Rogers’ 29 points.

The Jaguars earned their third straight 4A SPSL South crown, this year with a 11-2 league record, and a 15-4 record overall.

TAHOMA 59, SKYLINE 52 (OT)

Adam Davis drilled a game-tying three in the final seconds, propelling Tahoma to overtime in an eventual win over fellow-4A power Skyline on Saturday.

The visiting Bears overcame an eight-point deficit in the third quarter, using a 9-0 run to grab the definitive lead.

Davis dropped a game-high 24 points and snagged nine rebounds.

Tahoma (11-0, 15-3) remains undefeated in the NPSL and deadlocked with Federal Way (11-0, 18-1) atop the standings. The spotlight now shifts to Monday night, when the pair of undefeated programs meet — at Federal Way — for the league title.

“If you were to tell me we were gonna be undefeated in-league, in the type of league we’re in, I don’t know that I would have thought that,” said Tahoma coach Rick Tripp. “We figured one more year, but this group has just really done a nice job.”

Tahoma’s Dalton Brown scored 12 points and snagged seven rebounds. Bears junior Jayden Stephens added 10 points and eight boards.

Senior guard Nahmier Robinson paced Skyline with 14 points. Senior wing Dylan Reilly added 11.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WHITE RIVER 67, GIG HARBOR 31

Just within the first quarter, the Hornet’s sophomores Dakota Sprouse hit two 3-pointers and Vivian Kingston scored seven points. By the end of the quarter, White River led the Tides 18-7.

The hot shooting continued in the second quarter as junior MacKenzie Henson knocked in three more 3-pointers. By halftime, the Hornets held a 42-22 lead over Gig Harbor.

“We pressured their ball handlers in the first half,” said coach Chris Gibson. “Kingston did a really good job getting the ball down for us. She grabbed 11 rebounds, and that really controlled the inside game. We have lots of respect for Gig Harbor, I don’t think that we are 36 points better than they are. They just had one of those off nights.”

The second half saw even more great defense from White River. The Tides could only muster nine total points in the second half all while the Hornets kept making baskets.

Kingston eventually found her way to a game-high 25 points. Sprouse continued shooting well from beyond the arc as well, going a perfect five-for-five from three-point land. She ended her night with 15. Henson chipped in 14 as well.

For Gig Harbor, their leading scorers were junior Taylor Schwab scoring 12 and senior Olivia Paul with 10.
