GIG HARBOR 73, NORTH THURSTON 58

The Tides had a slow start to their game against the Rams, but eventually rose to the occasion and pulled away in the second quarter.

Early on, North Thurston senior Jackson Lusk was lighting up Gig Harbor on the scoreboard, scoring 13 of his 18 points in the first half. However, the Tides shored up their transition defense and that turned the flow of the game.

Now getting steals and moving the ball better, Gig Harbor’s offense exploded to take a big 37-26 lead into half time.

“We had a slow start to the game. Eventually, we were able to get stops in transitions, and we got some solid steals to get the ball back,” said coach Billy Landram. “We were moving the ball really well. We had to get everyone working.”

Senior Will Landram was on fire for the Tides. Scoring 34 points, he went eight-for-eight at the free throw line, sank two 3-pointers and had 10 field goals. Behind him was senior KeVaughn Harvey, adding in 17 points and five steals.

CHIEF LESCHI 86, ILWACO 60

The Warriors clinched their first league title since 2010, and sixth one in school history, with their win over the Fishermen.

Locked in a scoring battle with Ilwaco’s junior Beckett Turner, Chief Leschi was led by senior Brendon Brown. Brown, the No. 1 scorer for the Warriors, scored a game-high 26 points.

However, Turner came close as he dropped 25 himself to lead the Fishermen in scoring.

“Brendon Brown makes us go. He averages about 20+ points a game. [Senior] Gaston Dillon scored 17 tonight and we had a lot of players hover around 10,” said coach Scott Halasz. “That makes us dangerous. We have a lot of disruptive players on defense, and we pass up good shots for great shots. We were dictating the game the whole way. Our team is almost like a hurricane, other teams can’t stop it,”

Early in the season, Chief Leschi had a string of bad luck with injuries and illness. It gave bench players valuable minutes and the chance to acclimate to game speed.

Seniors Fred Lewis and Gaston Dillon dropped 12 and 17 respectively. Juniors Mickey Lara and Thomas Dillon scored 11 and 12, respectively.

For Ilwaco, senior Alex West scored 14 and junior Kyle Morris added 12.

OLYMPIA 53, SOUTH KITSAP 37

Olympia’s offense exploded out of the intermission and advanced in the 4A SPSL tournament with a win over South Kitsap on Tuesday night.

The Bears quadrupled South Kitsap’s output in the third quarter, marking a dramatic turnaround after Olympia scored only four points in the second.

“I thought we had a lot of good looks,” Olympia coach Dustin Workman said, referring to the slow second period. “We just couldn’t get anything to fall, it felt like.

“In the third... we came out with a little bit more energy. We pressured them, which helped us get the tempo going.”

Bears center Natalia McBride paced all scorers with 15 points. Senior guard Hannah Berschauer added 13.

South Kitsap’s Kyla Hoisington dropped a team-best 13 points.

Sumner’s defense held the Rams to 12 first-half points.

Junior point guard Lainee Houillon dropped 17 points in Sumner’s win. Freshman guard Kessa Nohr added 10.

EMERALD RIDGE 69, PUYALLUP 25

The Jaguars left little doubt on who was going to win in their game against the Vikings. Outscoring Puyallup 24-2 in the first quarter alone, Emerald Ridge cruised to a 4A SPSL tournament win.

Defensively, the Jaguars swarmed the ball and made sure to completely block out any second-chance the Vikings had to get the ball. And on offense, senior Alina Sapilak couldn’t stop dropping 3-pointers. In fact, 18 of her game-high 22 points came from beyond the arc.

“We did a good job swarming and keeping up ball pressure. They have a couple of tall players and it was about not doubling but putting lots of hands up,” said coach Arvin Mosley. “[Senior] Monique Carter continues to be our heart and soul. She had 10 points and of Alina’s six 3-pointers, she had four assists on them. Carter calms us down and gets us in our stuff. She calls out the plays she wants, and they work. She’s gotta be one of the best in the state.”

Carter may not have had the flashiest night with 10 points, but she continues to help lead her team through her steadying influence. She doesn’t get rattled, so neither does Emerald Ridge.

Senior Tami Gallo also put up 11 points off the bench, nine of which were also 3-pointers.

Kaylia Heidelberg and Brooke Zimmermann put on a second-quarter show, combining for all 19 of Peninsula’s points en route to a league win on Tuesday night.

Peninsula’s most-dangerous scorers nearly doubled Timberline’s output in the period, and each netted a pair of threes. Heidelberg, a junior guard, scored at least three points in every quarter.

The barrage broke a tied contest after one quarter and handed the Seahawks a lead never surrendered on Peninsula’s home court.

Heidelberg’s 23 points bested all players, and Zimmermann finished with 17. Both sunk four three-pointers.

Freshman forward Samantha Karjala added 10.

Shayla Cordis paced Timberline scorers with 14.

NORTH THURSTON 61, GIG HARBOR 50

Rams sophomore Soraya Ogaldez nearly scored half of the points North Thurston put up on the scoreboard against the Tides. Netting a game-high 31, Ogaldez played on another level.

What’s even more impressive is that she sat out for all but two minutes of the second quarter due to foul trouble.

“Soraya did a phenomenal job spreading out the offense. She knows when to shoot, and she knows when to dish,” said coach Jackie Meyer. “Our defense helped get a lot of points off of steals. Rather than play man like the last time we played Gig Harbor, we played an aggressive 3-2 zone to trap them at half court. We are not big but we are fast and we can jump lanes.”

Ogaldez’s big night is thanks to her spreading out the Tides’ defense. She created lanes for her to drive and get the easy bucket. Sophomore Grace Lee added nine, as did junior Alexis Meyer. Fellow junior Sadie Turner scored eight.

For Gig Harbor, senior Riley Peschek was limited to just 13 points thanks to the Rams jumping her as soon as she got the ball in her hands. That allowed junior Alex Ferrier to make five 3-pointers on the night for her 15 points. Senior Olivia Paul scored nine, as well.

The Vikings are dancing to the SPSL title game.

Zoom Diallo led all scorers with 19, pushing Curtis to an eighth straight win and over Bellarmine Prep in the league semifinal on Thursday night.

Curtis will face Olympia — the SPSL North and South regular-season champions, respectively — in Saturday’s league title game at Tacoma Community college.

The Vikings’ last loss came to the Bears on Jan. 7; Olympia held on, 72-60.

Diallo was a perfect eight-for-eight from the foul line on Thursday. He and teammate Tyce Paulsen each sunk a three-pointer in the contest; the latter finished with 17.

Four Lions scored in the double-digits, paced by Malik Momoh’s 15. Bellarmine Prep’s Tony Scarola drained a trio of three-pointers, a game-best.

GIG HARBOR 78, PENINSULA 47

The Tides ended their regular season with a 31-point win over their Fish Bowl rival Seahawks, eliminating their cross-town adversaries from playoff contention in the process.

Feeding off the energy from the big crowd assembled at Gig Harbor High School, seniors Will Landram and KyVaughn Harvey scored 24 and 18 points respectively.

“It was a big crowd, since it was Senior Night. But, [Peninsula] was as physical as they could be. We handled it though,” said coach Billy Landram. “We know what they’re about on defense. They did a good job mixing stuff up and trapping us, but we recognized what they were in and attacked the basket.”

Whereas Will would get his points by going to the basket and attacking the rim, Harvey found his points scoring in transition. He did go three-for-three from three-point land, though.

The Tides’ defense also limited any opportunity any Seahawk had getting into a shooting rhythm. Their high scorer for the night was senior Cole Bashaw with 12 points.

EMERALD RIDGE 62, BELLARMINE 53

The Jaguars are advancing to the 4A SPSL tournament finals after a bout with the Lions. Despite the incredibly slow start to the game, Emerald Ridge’s depth shined and pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Both teams missed shots in the first quarter. Bellarmine even had a possession where they got their own rebound five times before they made a bucket. As the nerves and hype faded away, both teams fell into their rhythm in the second quarter.

Coming off the bench for the Jaguars, senior Tami Gallo sparked her team’s offense by knocking three 3-pointers. Not to be outdone, Lions’ sophomore Keiara Curtis also got the ball rolling for her squad by scoring eight.

“There was no rhythm in the first quarter, lots of missed shots for both teams,” said coach Arvin Mosely. “These two teams were hyped to play. Gallo hit three 3’s in the second quarter coming off the bench. It was the same as our last game, she played big minutes and was a constant pest on defense. Bellarmine probably has a top-three guard trio, and we had to slow them down.”

In the third quarter, senior Marecia Barnett knocked in her own set of three 3-pointers to help Emerald Ridge take their first lead of the game. And that shifted the momentum of the game permanently.

Carrying that lead and letting their starters sit for a big chunk of time, the Jaguars allowed those players to come in with five minutes left with fresh legs. Freshman Ryah McGriff also went six-for-eight from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. From there, they carried the win home.

The high scorers for Emerald Ridge were senior Monique Carter with 14, McGriff with 13, and Barnett with 11.

Curtis led Bellarmine with 20, while junior Kiara Stone and senior Taylor Teeple both scored 11.

SUMNER 57, OLYMPIA 31

With their win over the Bears, the Spartans punched their ticket to the 4A SPSL finals. Thanks to contributions made by all the players on the roster, Sumner pulled away early.

Already leading 18-7 after the first quarter, the Spartan defense continued to create little space for Olympia’s players. When there was a shot taken by one of the Bears players, someone from Sumner came down with the rebound. There were no second chances given.

“We talked about it a lot yesterday and at warmups, but the defense started it. The biggest thing for us is that we came out with energy and intensity,” said coach Katie Hyppa. “We guard the full length of the court. We contained them and denied them any chance of getting the ball. [Olympia is] disciplined and good at their half court offense. We just want to run the court though.”

Junior Lainee Houillon had a great night for the Spartans. Her dishing the ball allowed her teammates to get open looks and score. And when she got the ball back, it was almost like she couldn’t miss as her shots fell in turn. She led Sumner with 18 points, while senior Kylie Griffin scored 11 and freshman Kessa Nohr reached 10 as well.

TAHOMA 66, DECATUR 30

With the Bears win over the Golden Gators, Tahoma lay claim to the 4A NPSL crown for the fourth straight year.

That means seniors Angelina Cavanaugh, Hope Hassmann, Lauryn Frederickson, Amelie Sitterud, and Abby Knutson have only known being league champs in their high school careers.

And it was only fitting that Hassmann got the ball rolling for the Bears as her first two 3-pointers of the game snowballed into the team shooting 11 3-pointers in just the first half.

“Tonight we had five seniors that have been a part of this four year run. Without them, the program would not be where it is today,” said coach Pete Smith. “We dominated Decatur on defense. The girls made some shots early and got five consecutive stops. We played our normal defense by limiting them to one shot, then got out into transition where we played really well.”

Tahoma managed to get three more 3-pointers in the game for a total of 14, two shy of the school record. Angelina was the leading scorer with 24 points, while her junior sister Lily came up with 20 as well.

Hassmann scored 11, Frederickson had six and rounding out the last five points was Sitterud.

The last three 4A NPSL girls basketball titles were the Bears’ outright. However in the 2019-20 season, they tied with Kentridge for tops in the league.

North Thurston’s Grace Lee and Sadie Tanner added 16 apiece.

ENUMCLAW 57, FRANKLIN PIERCE 48

For the first time since 2014, the Hornets are crowned the 2A SPSL champions. Thanks to big performances from seniors Noah Seabrands and Carter DeRosier, Enumclaw overcame a slow first half to capture the league title.

It was a stalemate entering halftime, as both teams were tied at 28. The talent and youth of Franklin Pierce made the game a bit tighter for the Hornets. That led to some early defensive breakdowns on Enumclaw’s part.

“Franklin Pierce is a talented and young team, we knew it was gonna be tough,” said coach Terry Johnson. “We got off to a slow start offensively by missing some easy shots. There were some breakdowns defensively, too. We cleaned a lot of them up at the half. The guys cut down on driving lanes for [Franklin Pierce] and did a much better job at forcing their errors.”

The defensive adjustments made by the Hornets allowed the offense to outscore the Cardinals 16-6 in the third quarter. The momentum fully swung to Enumclaw and they ran away with the rest of the game.

Seabrands led all scores with 22 points on the night, thanks to his willingness to attack the rim for the Hornets. DeRosier, who normally is the team’s high scorer, came away with 13. Even though the senior guard has the green light to take smart shots, the ball was working against him.

For Franklin Pierce, junior Mason Thomas led the way with 20. Sophomores Amaar Coleman and Javon Barbee added 12 and 11 points each.

One of the Trojans’ goals in their game against the Lions was to win every quarter. That way, their chances of winning the basketball game would be pretty good.

Thanks to limiting Auburn Mountainview’s offensive opportunities, Auburn accomplished their goal. In fact, they doubled the Lions’ final score.

“Our game had some really good defense. We put an entire game together and held them to 32 points,” said coach Ryan Hansen. “The guys were locked in and held Auburn Mountainview to one shot per possession. We also didn’t let their big guns get into any rhythm. We made them work for shots and finish possessions by rebounding.”

Sophomore Jaylen Petty was the biggest benefactor in the Trojans’ stingy defense. With more possessions for the Trojans, the more opportunities he had to score. Petty’s patience paid off as he got his chances to score. He came away with 18 on the night.

Senior Lateibreon Chandler was the only other Trojan to come away with double digit points with 11. The leading scorers for the Lions were senior Jamaal Elliott with 13 points and Mande Wanlemvo with 10.
