Away from Tacoma: South Sound contenders at 2A, 1A, 2B, 1B state basketball tournaments

There will be 14 boys and girls basketball programs from South Sound high schools competing in the Class 4A and 3A state tournaments at the Tacoma Dome, which begin Wednesday morning.

But, 10 more South Sound teams will head across the mountains to compete in the Class 2A and 1A tournaments in Yakima, and Class 2B and 1B tournaments in Spokane, which also begin Wednesday.

Here’s a look at the 2023 brackets at the Yakima Valley SunDome and Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, and each of the South Sound contenders.

SOUTH SOUND CONTENDERS

No. 10 Enumclaw (21-3) — 2A SPSL champions are headed to a tournament site for the first time since reaching the quarterfinals at the Tacoma Dome as a 4A program back in 2018, and posted a 16-game winning streak this winter before dropping a one-possession loss to Renton in the 2A SeaKing/West Central district title game. Only other in-state loss this season is to league rival Foss midway through December. Guard Carter DeRosier (15 ppg), this season’s 2A SPSL MVP, guard Noah Seabrands (14 ppg) and wing Karson Holt (14 ppg, 7 rpg) all average double figures scoring.

No. 11 Tumwater (19-5) — Back-to-back 2A EvCo champions are on the way to Yakima for a third consecutive season, and earned a fourth-place trophy at this tournament last winter. Two-time 2A EvCo MVP Luke Brewer (18.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.7 spg) leads Tumwater in scoring, while forward Andrew Collins (15.2 ppg, 6 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.2 spg) is also a key contributor at both ends of the floor. T-Birds have only lost to programs playing in state tournaments — 4A contenders Skyline, Camas and Davis, 3A contender Timberline and 2A No. 8 seed R.A. Long in the 4A Southwest District semifinals.

SOUTH SOUND CONTENDERS

No. 5 Tumwater (19-5) — T-Birds earned a share of the 2A EvCo title this season with W.F. West, won the 2A Southwest District title, and are in the Yakima Valley SunDome for the third consecutive season. Tumwater posted a 10-game winning streak before a regional round loss to Prosser last week. Forward Kylie Waltermeyer (16 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 2.1 apg, 3.1 spg) is the T-Birds’ top scorer.

No. 7 White River (19-6) — White River stunned Lynden on the road in the regional round to advance directly to the quarterfinals, and is headed to Yakima for a sixth consecutive tournament. The Hornets earned a share of the 2A SPSL title with rival Enumclaw, and have only lost to state tournament teams this season, in W.F. West, Enumclaw, Renton, 3A contender Arlington and 1A contenders Lynden Christian and Montesano. Forward Vivian Kingston (12.8 ppg, 8.1 rpg) is the Hornets’ top scorer.

No. 12 Enumclaw (18-6) — Hornets posted a late regular season eight-game winning streak to earn a share of the 2A SPSL title with White River, and bested Columbia River in a loser-out game in the regional round to return to a tournament site for the first time since reaching the quarterfinals in the Tacoma Dome as a 3A program in 2009. Forward Bella Firnkoess (12 ppg, 7 rpg, 2 bpg) and guard Charlee Torgison (12 ppg, 4 rpg, 3 apg, 3 spg) both average doubles figures scoring for Enumclaw.

No. 3 Annie Wright (23-1) — Gators are in Yakima for the second consecutive season, and carry a 17-game winning streak into this year’s tournament. Undefeated 1A Nisqually League and 1A West Central District champions haven’t lost a game to an in-state opponent this winter. All five Annie Wright starters — Jeremiah Harshman (14.5 ppg, 6 apg), Martin Kaupanger (14.5 ppg, 6 rpg), TJ Marshall (13.5 ppg), Amare Breedlove (13.5 ppg, 6 rpg) and Reggie Lester (10.5 ppg) — average double figures scoring to lead a balanced Gators offense.

Guard Brendon Brown (21 ppg) and guard Gaston Dillon (16 ppg) lead a balanced Chief Leschi offense, which includes four more double-digit scorers.
