High school football state championships in Washington are moving to a new home. A bigger, shinier home.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has agreed to a deal with the University of Washington to host the state football championships at Husky Stadium for the 2023 season.

The news was first reported by SBLive’s Todd Milles. The WIAA reached the agreement during an executive board meeting on Sunday.

The six championships games will be held during a two-day Friday to Saturday period in early December, according to a WIAA spokesperson.

After the 2018 season, the games were moved away from the Tacoma Dome to three high school stadiums in Pierce County: Sparks Stadium in Puyallup, Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma and Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood. The games were moved from the Tacoma Dome because of rising costs and poor sight lines after a new seating arrangement at the venue.

From 1977 to 1994, “Kingbowl” was held at the downtown Kingdome in Seattle before it moved south to the Tacoma Dome in 1995 where it was renamed “Gridiron Classic.”

The Class 1B, 1A and 3A championship games will be held on Friday this fall, while the 2B, 2A and 4A games will be held on Saturday.
