AUBURN MOUNTAINVIEW 40, KENTRIDGE 6

Elijah Baird continues to turn heads and impress coaching staffs — one touchdown at a time.

Auburn Mountainview’s second-year QB totaled five touchdowns Saturday, a dominant performance that lifted the Lions over Kentridge in the season-opener.

Baird threw three touchdowns, rushed for another pair, and helped Auburn Mountainview initiate the running clock in the fourth quarter. He completed 14-of-20 passes for 193 yards despite two drops by Lions wideouts.

He’s more than earned the praise of head coach Kent Rodseth, who already considers Baird one of the state’s top playmakers.

“I think our quarterback is one of the top quarterbacks in the state,” Rodseth said. “He just did the things you expect him to do.

“He made some great reads. He missed one or two, and then we’d come back to the same play and he found the guys that he should have.”

Lions WR Mande Wanlemvo secured a 48-yard touchdown pass from Baird late in the third quarter, which gave Auburn Mountainview a 28-0 lead.

The Lions defense blanked Kentridge for three quarters, but surrendered a late touchdown when its offense fumbled deep in its own territory and provided premier field position.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 34, CEDAR PARK CHRISTIAN 18

A pair of Cougars boasted 100-yard, two-touchdown performances, and Cascade Christian rolled to a week-one win on Saturday.

WR Jackson Almond posted a 7-103-2 line, and tailback Jack Tangen took 18 carries for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Almond dominated the Cascade Christian target share, the junior standout and 1,200-yard receiver in 2022. He grabbed both of QB Grant Johnson’s touchdown passes and seven of his 10 completions.

Johnson went 10-for-17 with 161 passing yards, two touchdowns to Almond, and an interception.

Tangen added a 39-yard reception for a team-high 150 scrimmage yards.

Cascade Christian defenders forced a trio of Cedar Park interceptions, one each by Caden Fredericks, Maddox Miller, and QB Johnson — also a free safety.

Cougars FS Calvin Peterson logged a team-high five tackles; seven logged three-plus tackles.

CLOVER PARK 41, FOSS 0

Clover Park ran away in the second half, and its defense posted a season-opening shutout in a rout of Foss on Saturday afternoon.

The 41-point margin of victory is Clover Park’s largest since Sept. 14, 2018 (48, Evergreen of Seattle). And it puts the Timberwolves immediately atop the 2A SPSL, for now.

Clover Park (1-0) hosts Interlake for a non-league matchup on Friday at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
