SATURDAY’S RESULTS (NOV. 4)
3A DISTRICT ROUND
MOUNT TAHOMA 53, WEST SEATTLE 14
Welcome to 1984 revisited, Mount Tahoma Thunderbirds.
Mount Tahoma earned its first state football tournament berth in 39 years with its 53-14 victory over West Seattle on a rainy Saturday night at home. Back then, the T-Birds were not that far removed from back-to-back 4A state titles in 1979 and 1980.
This 2023 contingent, the 3A Pierce County League champions, will find out who they play in the Round of 16 when seedings and pairings are announced by the WIAA on Sunday.
“We have a lot of things to clean up,” Mount Tahoma coach Keith Terry said. “But living in the moment, this feels amazing. Where this program was when I first got here to where we are now, It’s amazing to see the growth.”
Mount Tahoma earned its berth despite putting together only two sustained drives of over 50 yards the entire evening against the Wildcats. The T-Birds had scoring drives of 12, 1, 23, and 35 yards along with a five-play, 57-yarder to open the third quarter and a four-play, 87-yard drive highlighted by quarterback Tre Walker’s 70 yard touchdown run.
They forced West Seattle quarterback Bo Glonet into five interceptions, returning one for another score, and got a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown from DJ Ervin.
Walker also scored on a 28-yard jaunt (culminating that first third-quarter drive) and had 117 total yards rushing in the game on eight carries. He led a three-pronged rushing attack from Mount Tahoma, with Brison Bailey running for 77 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns and Felix Diaz adding 61 yards and another score on six carries.
“It’s paying off,” Walker said. “As a team we worked so hard all offseason, and it’s great to see it paying off.”
The game was delayed for nearly an hour with 11 minutes, 10 seconds to play due to an injured West Seattle player, an injury that brought both a fire truck and ambulance onto the Mount Tahoma turf as Deitrick Kamillo was administered to and ultimately removed on a stretcher.
Kamillo collided with his own player and immediately crumpled to the turf as the Wildcats tried to run down Diaz on his 35-yard scoring run with 11:10 left in the game.
“I hope the kid’s okay,” Terry said.
The T-Birds led the game 45-14 at the time. As the ambulance left the field with the injured teenager, both teams lined up inside the numbers on the field in tribute while the vehicle drove down the middle.
AUBURN RIVERSIDE 28, JUANITA 9
Auburn Riverside scored four second-half touchdowns in the district round Saturday night at Auburn Memorial Stadium to secure the first trip to the state playoffs in program history.
Juanita scored the game’s first points midway through the first quarter on a 37-yard field goal, and eventually carried a 3-0 lead into the halftime break.
But, Auburn Riverside’s defense held Juanita scoreless in the second, third, and for much of the fourth, and the Ravens’ offense scored the game’s next 28 points on the way to the eventual victory.
Auburn Riverside running back Thyrou Umi-Tuato’o scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns on a 6-yard run in the third as the Ravens took a 7-3 lead they never lost with 5:53 to go in the quarter.
Andrew Wold then connected with Cole Svendsen on a 74-yard touchdown pass with 1:12 left in the third to make it 14-3.
Jonathan Epperson (46 yards) and Umi-Tuato’o (27 yards) each added a rushing touchdown in the fourth to push the lead as high as 28-3.
Juanita scored its only touchdown on a 10-yard pass in the final seconds.
Umi-Tuato’o led Auburn Riverside in rushing with 20 carries for 102 yards and the two touchdowns, and Epperson added two carries for 48 yards and a score.
Wold completed 11-of-17 passes for 196 yards and the one touchdown, while Svendsen tallied three catches for 109 yards and the score and Andrew Shrader had five catches for 77 yards.
Lucas Lemalu and Mika Petaia each added interceptions on defense.
Auburn Riverside (7-3), which closed out an undefeated 3A NPSL title last week, advances to the 3A state bracket, which will be seeded by WIAA committee Sunday.
Juanita ends the season at 7-3.
LINCOLN 56, AUBURN 22
Lincoln piled up 480-plus yards of offense and eight touchdowns — including seven on the ground — to rout visiting Auburn in the 3A district round Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Bowl in Tacoma.
The Abes (7-3) scored four touchdowns in the first quarter, two more in the second, took a 42-16 lead into the halftime break and eventually ran away with the win to secure a trip to the 3A state bracket.
Lincoln took the game’s first lead on a 9-yard run from Maurice Gosby Jr. less than two minutes in. The Trojans took their only lead on the next drive, when Luvens Valcin completed a quick series with a 2-yard run.
The Abes took the decisive lead moments later, though. Jemani Teplasy returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards, and Gosby added a 4-yard touchdown run on the first play of the drive to make it 13-8 with 10:05 left in the first quarter.
Lincoln added a 12-yard touchdown run by Gosby and 69-yard touchdown pass from Sione Kaho to Teplasy to take a 28-8 lead by the end of the quarter.
Auburn responded early in the second on a 67-yard scoring run from Lucas Whitehall-Gilkes, but the Abes answered with a pair of rushing touchdowns from Jadeon Scranton (1 and 37 yards) to extend the lead to 26 points by the break.
Gosby scored a fourth touchdown on a 46-yard run midway through the third, and Tesplasy added a 1-yard scoring run six minutes later to push Lincoln’s lead to 40.
Auburn scored once more on a 58-yard pass from DJ Bielza to Valcin late in the fourth.
Valcin led the Trojans with nine catches for 157 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for another 21 yards and a score on five carries. Whitehall-Gilkes paced Auburn in rushing with 105 yards and the one touchdown on six carries, while RJ Conlan had 16 carries for 82 yards.
Kaho completed 9-of-20 passes for 183 yards and the one touchdown for the Abes, while Teplasy had two catches for 72 yards and a score to lead the Abes in receiving.
Gosby rushed for a game-high 142 yards and the four touchdowns on 10 carries, while Scranton had 17 carries for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
Calvary Seui had two interceptions for Lincoln on defense, while Kanoa Teplasy added another.
Lincoln, which has now advanced to eight of the past nine 3A state brackets, will enter next week’s state playoffs on a six-game winning streak. First-round matchups will be announced by WIAA committee Sunday.
Auburn ends the season at 7-3.
MARYSVILLE-PILCHUCK 28, GIG HARBOR 7
Gig Harbor finally did find a way to move the football in its 3A district playoff game on Saturday. But even when the Tides eventually threatened, Marysville-Pilchuck had the answers.
The result was a second consecutive loss for the Tides, whose season ended with a 28-7 loss to the Tomahawks at Roy Anderson Field in Purdy. Gig Harbor’s offense was held to just seven points for the second straight week after it lost the 3A SSC title game at Yelm eight days ago, 57-7.
Against the visiting Tomahawks, Gig Harbor had all sorts of trouble moving the ball through most of three quarters. Marysville-Pilchuck held the Tides to 44 total yards in the first half and Gig Harbor had just one second-half first down when they took the ball back with 1:19 to play in the quarter.
By then, Joseph Davis had paid off two Marysville-Pilchuck drives with scoring runs of 1 and 12 yards, and the Tomahawks had finally pulled out in front after playing the first half to a scoreless tie.
“We thought we could play some physical brand of football today,” Marysville-Pilchuck coach Dalton Schwetz said. “Those guys have some extremely talented skill players. We knew that going in. Our goal was to stop the run game with a light box. So props to our D-line for getting that done. And once you make them one-dimensional, then we had a shot to match up with them.”
The Tides did threaten on each of their final four possessions beginning with the one that started with 1:19 left in the third quarter.
But quarterback Benji Park was stopped on a fourth-and-1 from the Tomahawks 10-yard line; then Park had a pass fall incomplete on fourth-and-goal from the 6. Park threw an interception on another fourth down that turned into a Dominik Kendrick 60-yard pick-six to make the score 28-0 with 1:04 to play before he and Henry Blake connected for a 40-yard touchdown with 15.6 seconds remaining to make it 28-7.
“That was the difference,” Gig Harbor coach Darrin Reeves said.
The Tomahawks ran for 312 total yards. Davis carried it 26 times for 181 yards while Kenai Sinaphet added 129 yards on just nine carries.
“Honestly, it’s just mentality,” Davis said. “You just go and run over fools. That’s it. I’m gonna put my team on my back.”
KENNEDY CATHOLIC 28, NORTH CREEK 20
4A DISTRICT ROUND
The Lancers scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second half to top North Creek, 28-20, in the 4A district round Saturday at Highline Memorial Stadium in Burien and secure a return trip to next week’s state playoffs.
Kennedy Catholic scored the game’s first points on a 3-yard touchdown run by Indiana Jones in the first, but the Jaguars answered to tie the score at 7-7.
The Lancers added another touchdown before the quarter ended on a 20-yard pass from Devon Forehand to Mason Moriarty, but North Creek again responded before the break, and the two program’s entered halftime tied at 14-14.
Moriarty gave the Lancers the lead for good with a 40-yard rushing touchdown in the third. North Creek again answered, but a missed PAT attempt kept Kennedy Catholic in the lead at 21-20 by the end of the quarter.
Jones added a 1-yard rushing touchdown with 3:16 to play in the game to lift the Lancers to the eventual 28-20 win.
Kennedy Catholic (9-1), last season’s 4A state runner-up, returns to the state bracket on a nine-game winning streak, and has not lost to an in-state opponent this season. First-round matchups will be announced by WIAA committee Sunday.
North Creek ends the season at 3-6.
SKYLINE 25, PUYALLUP 22 (OT)
Skyline’s Sean Lee connected on a 23-yard field goal to give the Spartans the lead in overtime, and Jaxon Menold intercepted a third-down pass over the middle on Puyallup’s ensuing series to end the Vikings’ season in the district round Saturday afternoon in Sammamish.
Skyline (7-3) will advance to the 4A state first round, which will be seeded by WIAA committee Sunday, while Puyallup ends the season at 5-5.
The Spartans opened scoring with a 61-yard touchdown run by Josh Menold on the game’s first series, took an 8-0 lead on a two-point conversion pass, and kept the lead until early in the fourth quarter.
Puyallup cut the lead to 8-7 early in the second on a 14-yard scoring run from Kaden Rolfsness, but Skyline responded on the next series with a 28-yard touchdown run by Luke Morgan.
The Vikings answered with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Paulino to Rolfness late in the second to again cut the lead to one point, but Skyline carried a 15-14 advantage into the half.
The Spartans pushed the lead back to 22-14 on their first drive in the third on a 45-yard pass from Michael Grimmer to Morgan.
Puyallup tied the game early in the fourth, following a sack and fumble recovery that gave the Vikings an immediate red zone opportunity at the 11-yard line. Rolfsness scored on a 5-yard touchdown run, and Kyson Douglas converted the two-point try to make it 22-22.
The score stayed there until Skyline’s eventual game-winning field goal in overtime.
2A DISTRICT ROUND
TUMWATER 55, RIDGEFIELD 13
The T-Birds are on the way back to the 2A state playoffs following a 55-13 rout of visiting Ridgefield in the district round Saturday evening at Tumwater District Stadium.
Tumwater scored each of its eight touchdowns — five rushing, two passing and a pick-six — in the first half, piled up 460 yards of total offense and took a 55-6 lead into the halftime break.
Peyton Davis led the way for the T-Birds on the ground, rushing for 118 yards and touchdowns of 70 and 48 yards.
Logan Cole had touchdown runs of 6 and 36 yards, while Mathias Rodriguez added a 62-yard scoring run.
T-Birds quarterback Ethan Kastner tossed a pair of touchdowns to Jake Dillon (74 yards) and Wyatt Chase (14 yards), and finished the game with 164 yards on 8-of-10 passing.
Dane Iverson recorded Tumwater’s final touchdown on a 97-yard interception return in the second quarter.
Tumwater (10-0) has advanced to each of the past 13 state brackets. The T-Birds now await their first-round opponent, which will be announced by WIAA committee Sunday.
Ridgefield ends the season at 6-4.
FRIDAY’S RESULTS (NOV. 3)
4A DISTRICT ROUND
EMERALD RIDGE 50, BOTHELL 36
A safety brought Bothell within six points midway through the fourth quarter in a Week 10 playoff game against Emerald Ridge at Sparks Stadium on Friday night.
If Bothell could bleed enough clock and march down the field, it looked like the Cougars might be able to pull off the upset. Sean Tutty had other ideas.
The Emerald Ridge defensive back jumped a route and picked off Bothell quarterback Jaylen Viars, returning the interception past midfield and to the Bothell 10-yard line. One play later, Jaguars running back Navarre Dixon scored a 10-yard rushing touchdown to put the game away.
Emerald Ridge won 50-36 and advanced to the state tournament for the second consecutive year.
“It was a big play,” Tutty said. “Our corner told me before the play, ‘hey, he’s hitching up right here.’ Just got under it, made a good play and got the ball back to our offense. Our offense was rolling all night. Going down the field, we didn’t doubt for a second we were going to get a stop and win the game.”
Emerald Ridge quarterback Jake Schakel was thrilled to get the ball back and equally thrilled for his teammate to enjoy the spotlight.
“Sean Tutty is a grinder,” Schakel said. “He’s a captain, he absolutely deserves all the praise he gets. That kid made a hell of a play and changed the momentum of the game, for real.”
Emerald Ridge had been there before. A year earlier, the Jaguars hosted Bothell in a Week 10 playoff game at Sparks Stadium and beat the Cougars soundly, 41-14. Bothell offered more resistance this time around, but still had no answers for Emerald Ridge quarterback Jake Schakel, and the pinpoint precision of the Jaguars’ offensive attack.
Schakel diced up Bothell’s defense, completing 15-of-18 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown. Receiver Tony Harste led the Jags with six catches for 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Kajon Babock also had a receiving touchdown, in addition to a momentum-swinging 85-yard kickoff return touchdown just before halftime.
Every time Bothell made things interesting, Emerald Ridge had an answer.
“I’m so thankful we play in our league (4A SPSL), because we’re just battled tested,” said Emerald Ridge coach Adam Schakel. “I think it paid off.”
On the offensive end, this is maybe the most balanced run-pass capable team Schakel has had as a coach, thanks to running back Navarre Dixon, who delivered a hit-stick touchdown run in the win and racked up 146 yards and two scores on the ground.
“It’s hard for defenses to play against us because Navarre’s a great running back,” Jake Schakel said. “Our line does really well. They can’t just key on our pass. It really complements our whole offense, our coaches do a great job, especially the o-line.”
Added Adam, Jake’s dad: “It keeps them honest a little bit,” he said. “Can’t just empty the box, because Navarre’s in there.”
GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN 63, KAMIAK 15
The Eagles found the end zone early and often in Friday night’s district round rout of visiting Kamiak at Art Crate Field in Spanaway — scoring all 63 of their points in the first half to secure their ninth consecutive trip to the 4A state playoffs.
Graham-Kapowsin running back Alele Fa’apito opened scoring less than three minutes into the contest on a 21-yard scoring run for the first of the Eagles’ four first-quarter touchdowns.
Daveon Superales added three scoring passes before the quarter was up to Jabez Woods (49 yards), Khris Norris (7 yards) and Malachi Durant (16 yards).
The Eagles added five more touchdowns in the second quarter to eventually take a 63-7 lead into the break.
Woods caught a second scoring pass, this time 21 yards from Kaden Bourgeau, Nikoh Rivers rushed for touchdowns of 15 and 46 yards, and Jonathan Collins (1 yard) and Brenden Harder (52 yards) also added rushing touchdowns.
The Eagles led 56-0 before the Knights (1-9) scored the first of their two touchdowns on a 54-yard run by Ezra Davis with 2:17 left in the first half.
Kamiak’s only other touchdown was on a 79-yard pass from Tyler Odegaard to Connor O’Meara with 6:03 remaining in the fourth.
Each of Graham-Kapowsin’s 14 pass attempts resulted in completions, led by Superales, who was a perfect 7-of-7 for 149 yards and the three touchdowns.
Ten Eagles tallied rushing attempts, led by Rivers, who had 64 yards and the two scores on three carries. Nine Graham-Kapowsin receivers caught passes, led by Woods, who had two catches for 70 yards and the two touchdowns.
Graham-Kapowsin (10-0) enters the state bracket still undefeated, having bested all nine opponents in a tough 4A SPSL.
“We feel like our league really kind of set us up for success,” Logan said. “I truly don’t think there’s as much talent as an entire league as we have in the SPSL, so I think just going through that gauntlet has really, really prepared us.”
The 4A SPSL champion Eagles already have signature wins over expected state contenders in Curtis, Emerald Ridge and Sumner — who each also advanced with double-digit victories Friday — this season as they prepare for a return to the 4A state bracket.
“We feel confident, we’re excited about the opportunity,” Logan said. “Our kids know this is what they’ve worked really, really hard for, for quite some time now.”
State brackets will be seeded by committee Sunday. Graham-Kapowsin is one of two remaining undefeated teams in 4A, joined by Eastmont (9-0), which plays a district round game against Richland on Saturday.
CURTIS 45, TAHOMA 3
Curtis will return to the state playoffs for the first time since 2018.
Vikings quarterback Rocco Koch rushed for five touchdowns and passed for another Friday night in University Place, as Curtis routed visiting Tahoma, 45-3, in the district round to secure a spot in next week’s 4A state bracket.
Curtis took an early lead when Ethan Bell completed the Vikings’ first series with a 23-yard field goal, set up by a Parker Mady interception on Tahoma’s game-opening drive.
The Bears tied the score at 3-3 later in the quarter, driving to the Curtis 1 before eventually kicking an 18-yard field goal, but Curtis regained the lead for good four plays later, when Koch cut to his left on a keeper and rushed 27 yards into the end zone.
Koch added two more touchdown runs of 16 and 8 yards in the second quarter, and finished the half with 153 yards on the ground.
Tahoma turned the ball over on downs twice in the second quarter, including once at the Curtis 9, and Xavier Ahrens intercepted the Bears’ final pass of the half as Curtis entered the break up, 24-3.
Tahoma recovered an onside kick attempt to open the third quarter, but turned the ball over on downs just outside of the red zone, and Koch, lining up as a running back, took a carry 77 yards up the left sideline on Curtis’ first play of the half to extend the lead to four touchdowns.
Koch collected two more touchdowns in the second half, adding a 7-yard scoring pass to Mataio Wilson in the third quarter and a 1-yard run in the fourth to push the lead to 45-3.
The Bears turned the ball over on downs twice more in the second half, the Vikings recovered a fumble on a punt return, and Memphis Robinson added another interception for Curtis on Tahoma’s final series as the Vikings ran away with the win.
Koch completed 12-of-19 passes for 124 yards and the one touchdown, and added 244 rushing yards and the five scores on 17 carries. Ahrens led Curtis in receiving with seven catches for 74 yards.
Bryant Spangler rushed for 126 yards on 22 carries for Tahoma, including 121 in the first half.
Curtis (8-2) advances to next week’s state first round, which will be seeded by committee Sunday. Tahoma ends the season at 4-6.
SUMNER 48, BATTLE GROUND 6
Sumner scored three touchdowns on the ground, three through the air and added a pair of field goals Friday night in a 48-6 district round win over visiting Battle Ground at Sunset Chev Stadium.
The Spartans, who have reached the 4A state quarterfinals each of the past two seasons, advance to the state playoffs for the ninth time since 2012 with the win.
“We just feel like we’re really peaking at this time, and getting better every week,” Sumner coach Keith Ross said.
Sumner never trailed in the contest, scoring the game’s first points on a 4-yard run from Steele Isaacs midway through the first quarter. The Tigers answered with a touchdown run, but Sumner blocked the extra point attempt to remain in the lead at 7-6.
The Spartans then scored the next 41 points unanswered to run away with the win.
Tristen Rebar connected with Braylon Pope on a 20-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 14-6 by the end of the first quarter, and added another 44-yard scoring pass to Pope in the second that gave the Spartans a 31-6 lead at halftime.
Last year’s 4A SPSL MVP Matthew Spurbeck added a 4-yard rushing score in the second quarter, returning from a knee injury for his first game since Week 4 against Puyallup.
Spurbeck led the Spartans in rushing playing limited snaps, collecting 108 yards and the touchdown on 13 carries.
“It was nice to have Spurbeck back,” Ross said. “It gave us a big emotional boost.”
Rebar added a third scoring pass to Kaden Malesis (14 yards) in the third quarter, and a 1-yard rushing touchdown.
Austin Ferencz had a pair of field goals for the Spartans in the win, including connecting from 42 yards in the third quarter. Ferencz was also 6-of-6 on PAT attempts.
Rebar completed 13-of-18 passes for 197 yards and the three touchdowns, and added the one rushing score, while Pope led the Spartans in receiving with two catches for 63 yards and the two touchdowns. Isaacs added 52 yards and the one score on seven carries.
Sumner (7-3) now awaits its first-round opponent in the state bracket, which will be seeded by committee Sunday.
Battle Ground, which opened the season 7-0 before back-to-back losses to Skyview and Camas the past two weeks in 4A GSHL play, ends the season at 7-3.
WOODINVILLE 13, DECATUR 6
In a season filled with streak-busting performances, the Decatur Gators could have added another on a do-or-die try on Friday night at Federal Way Memorial Field. Instead, the state playoff bracket berth will have to wait at least one more year.
Woodinville denied the Gators their first-ever state playoff berth with a sloppy (due to sometimes torrential rain) 13-6 victory over host Decatur. While Friday’s game technically was a playoff game — the Gators’ first since the 2003 season when they lost a Week 10 contest to Rogers — Week 10 simply is a stepping-stone to the 4A state bracket.
Woodinville and the other 15 district game winners will find out who their Round of 16 opponents are when the seedings are announced by the WIAA on Sunday.
“This week definitely is all about getting to next week,” Decatur coach Matt Vaeena said. “But it’s that way for everybody who is playing this week.”
The Gators (8-2) got off to a positive start, actually. After stopping the Falcons (7-3) on their opening possession, Decatur methodically drove 45 yards, taking 12 plays and trading two penalties on each side to use up just over seven minutes of the first quarter before Nehemiah Washington put the Gators in front 6-0 with a 4-yard run.
Woodinville responded with a short drive of 27 yards, capped by a Chase Rudin 6-yard run to take a 7-6 lead. Then with nine seconds left in the first half, Woodinville extended to 13-6 when quarterback Levi Grothen found Ryan Bowles for a 10-yard touchdown.
Rudin finished with 101 yards rushing on 23 carries. Meanwhile, in the rain, Washington carried the load offensively on the ground for Decatur, as well. Washington ran it 26 times for 109 yards, but the biggest play of the game was a Spencer Holloway passing attempt.
The Gators quarterback looked to have a man open at the goal line on a first down at the Woodinville 15 with just over six minutes to go. But as the ball got there, Falcons defensive back Nour Elgohary stepped in front and intercepted the ball.
“I saw it, stepped up and just had to make a play,” said Elgohary, who was making his first-ever start for Woodinville. “Really, if they’d kept running it they probably would have scored.”
3A DISTRICT ROUND
YELM 60, KENT-MERIDIAN 0
When the Tornados’ defense trotted to the sidelines after forcing another three-and-out to start the second half, opposing Kent-Meridian had yet to muster a first down.
Yelm’s defense — the same core that won the program a 3A title in 2022 — held Kent-Meridian to minus-4 total yards of offense through halftime, plus the third quarter’s opening drive. By then, the Royals completed just two passes for 2 yards. Kent-Meridian’s 24 carries went for minus-6.
Yelm quarterbacks Damian Aalona and Parker Myers threw two touchdowns apiece, running back Anthony Kiamco took back-to-back punt returns to the house, and the Tornados crushed their first opponent of the postseason in the district round Friday night at Yelm High School.
Yelm went without a 100-yard rusher or receiver. Aalona tallied 109 yards on 7-of-9 passing, but he and Myers were efficient, tossing four touchdowns on 11 combined throws. Myers completed his two pass attempts for 12 yards and two touchdowns.
The Tornados have booked their return trip to the state bracket, already established as a favorite. Yelm hasn’t allowed more than nine points to a 3A opponent all season.
Just after Kiamco erupted for a 36-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, he took consecutive punt returns for touchdowns, both from 54 yards. Yelm jogged into halftime with a 46-0 lead.
Kiamco took five total carries for 82 yards and a score.
Leading receiver Marius Aalona grabbed two receptions for 42 yards and a third-quarter touchdown. Receiver Jacob Ford took his only catch for a 26-yard score.
Receiver Jacob Track logged two catches for 17 yards and a touchdown.
Running back Brayden Platt took six carries for 47 yards and a touchdown, adding 10 tackles and three tackles for loss on defense.
Defensive back Arlo Henderson scooped a first-quarter fumble and dashed 35 yards for a score, while defensive end Kenji Scanlan logged six tackles and three tackles for loss and Onyx Carter tackled six and recorded a sack.
Following a perfect 14-0 season last fall, the defending 3A champion Tornados enter the first round of the state playoffs next week on an active 24-game winning streak.
Brackets will be seeded by committee, and first-round matchups announced Sunday.
Kent-Meridian ends the season at 4-6.
2A DISTRICT ROUND
ENUMCLAW 77, SAMMAMISH 0
Enumclaw scored a season-high 77 points, and recorded another shutout to secure a return trip to the 2A state playoffs with a rout of Sammamish on Friday night at Pete’s Pool.
The undefeated 2A SPSL champion Hornets (10-0) have now outscored their opponents this season, 465-46, and tallied their fifth shutout in 10 games in the district round win over Sammamish.
“We’ve got some talented kids out there that were making plays for their team and putting our offense in good field position,” Enumclaw coach Mark Gunderson said.
The Hornets led 56-0 at halftime, running away with their ninth consecutive multi-touchdown victory to advance to the 2A state bracket for the third consecutive season.
Enumclaw reached the quarterfinals in 2021, and made a program-best semifinals appearance last fall as the tournament’s No. 4 seed before a loss to two-time defending state champion Lynden.
The Hornets are now one of three remaining undefeated teams in 2A this fall — along with Tumwater, which plays in the district round Saturday, and Anacortes, which has a bye into the tournament — and await their first-round opponent, which will be announced Sunday. All state brackets will be seeded by WIAA committee.
“No matter what seed we get we’re going to come to play every week, and see how far we can take this thing,” Gunderson said.
Sammamish ends the season at 5-5.
ORTING 44, OLYMPIC 0
The Cardinals will enter next week’s state bracket on a six-game winning streak following a convincing 44-0 shutout of visiting Olympic in the district round Friday night.
Orting rushed for five touchdowns and added an interception return for a touchdown and a field goal in the victory, led 17-0 at halftime, and 44-0 by the end of the third quarter.
The Cardinals (9-1), who ended the regular season second in the 2A SPSL standings with only one loss to undefeated two-time defending league champion Enumclaw, have now posted multi-touchdown victories in each of their nine wins this season.
The program returns to the state bracket for the first time since 2021, and the Cardinals now awaits their first-round opponent, which will be announced by WIAA committee Sunday.
Olympic ends the season at 5-5.
THURSDAY’S RESULTS (NOV. 2)
EATONVILLE 15, CASTLE ROCK 14
Hunter Klumpar connected with Ky Nation on a 23-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth, and Eatonville shut out Castle Rock in the second half in the district round Thursday night in Eatonville.
The Rockets led early, and eventually took a 14-8 lead into the break with a pair of first-half passing touchdowns.
Nation also threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Riley Hill as the Cruisers took an 8-7 lead late in the first half, but the Rockets responded with a scoring pass on their next drive to take the six-point lead into halftime.
That lead held until the fourth, when Nation scored on the 23-yard pass from Klumpar, and Colton Hebrand added the decisive extra point.
Dylan Norman intercepted a pass in Cruisers territory on Castle Rock’s final series to close out the win.
Klumpar completed 17-of-31 passes for 143 yards and the touchdown, while Hill caught four passes for 58 yards and the one score, and Nation had six catches for 41 yards and a score and the 38-yard passing touchdown.
Eatonville (6-4) is set to make a fifth consecutive trip to the state playoffs, which will be seeded by WIAA committee Sunday.
Castle Rock ends the season at 4-6.
