District 3/4 3A Tournament

Championship

North Thurston 3, Gig Harbor 0

Stampeding to sweeps in both semifinal and championship matches, the Rams are the undisputed District 3/4 champions for the first time in program history — encapsulated by North Thurston’s title win over Gig Harbor on Saturday night.

The Rams (20-0) hoisted their first-ever district trophy at Capital High School, still in control of a perfect season as North Thurston enters the state tournament behind lightning-fast scoring and scrappy defense.

“I’ve been coaching for a very long time. I coach basketball, too. This is the first team… that just wants to play together and all own their roles and are super supportive as a group,” Rams coach Jackie Meyer said.

The Rams have lost seven sets all season. Sophomore outside hitter Addison Conner owns a team-high 206 kills and 3.8 kills per set in 54 sets, per MaxPreps. Chloe Dixon (senior) and Samantha Humphrey (sophomore) are co-leaders with 48 solo blocks.

The Yakima Valley SunDome awaits North Thurston next weekend, where the WIAA hosts the 3A and 4A state championships from Nov. 17-18. Matchups are to be determined.

“Everyone is so appreciative of what everybody can bring to the team,” Meyer said. “They’re all rallying around each other. It motivates everyone to play their best volleyball.

“They’re just peaking and playing the best volleyball they could possibly play at the right moment.”

Gig Harbor joins North Thurston in next weekend’s state tournament. Other 3A programs headed to Yakima representing the South Sound: Auburn Riverside, Central Kitsap, and Peninsula.

District 3/4 4A Tournament

The Bears are District 3/4 champions.

Olympia conquered Camas in four sets Saturday, a win that secured the district trophy and propels the Bears into next weekend’s state tournament on an eight-game win streak.

The Bears (22-3, 8-0) stormed to an undefeated finish in the 4A SPSL South, defeating 4A SPSL North champion Puyallup in a district quarterfinal Friday.

Senior Ava Kruckenberg nailed the fifth and final shot in the left corner, propelling the Spudders into the 2A semifinals on Nov. 17 and spoiling Fife’s perfect season three wins shy of a state title.

Fife (75th minute) and Ridgefield (76th) traded goals late in regulation, ending a scoreless draw for much of Saturday’s quarterfinal before Kruckenberg and the Spudders prevailed.

Fife’s season ends at 21-1.

No. 12 Mead 3, No. 5 Auburn Riverside, 0

Mead stunned the Ravens with two goals in the opening 10 minutes — enough to upset fifth-ranked Auburn Riverside in the state tournament’s first round.

Mead midfielder Teryn Gardner (two goals) and Nora Cullen scored Friday at Interbay Stadium.

The Panthers are the first team to score three goals against Auburn Riverside since Oct. 9, 2018, per the Federal Way Mirror’s Ben Ray.

Mead meets No. 4 Lakeside (Seattle) in a 3A quarterfinal on Saturday at 11 a.m.

No. 11 Ferndale 3, No. 6 Stadium 2 (PK)

Ferndale outlasted Stadium in penalty kicks, 5-3, in a shootout that sent the Golden Eagles to the state quarterfinals.

District 3/4 3A Tournament

Quarterfinals

North Thurston 3, Kelso 1

North Thurston outlasted Kelso in four sets, a victory in the district quarterfinals that guarantees the program a state-tournament bid.

The Rams will play in Saturday’s district semifinals at Capital High School and, regardless of result, can book their tickets for the Yakima Valley SunDome next weekend.

“They’re just going to keep pushing for goals they’ve set for themselves this year,” North Thurston coach Jackie Meyer said. “They’re trying to reach every high expectation they’ve set.”

The Rams swept Capital earlier Friday in the opening round, 3-0, their third meeting with an SSC league rival — and in the Cougars’ home building, to boot.

“Everything we hit at them, they were digging up,” Meyer said. “I told the girls that was a really good win in three (sets), because Capital gave it everything they had.”

Up next: North Thurston meets Prairie in a district semifinal Saturday at noon.

“I think it’ll be more like a championship game,” Meyer said. “It’s going to be a battle.”

Gig Harbor 3, Auburn Riverside 2

The Tides are rolling to state.

Gig Harbor won a decisive fifth set Friday, lifting the Tides over Auburn Riverside and into the district semifinals.

Friday’s win guarantees Gig Harbor a trip to the state tournament in Yakima next weekend.

First, a chance to hoist the district trophy. Gig Harbor meets Mountain View at noon Saturday at Capital High School, and with a win, would play again at 5 p.m. in the district championship.

WEDNESDAY (NOV. 8)

WIAA State Championships

First Round

4A

No. 11 Puyallup 3, No. 8 Richland 2

The Vikings are “off to the Elite Eight.”

Puyallup knocked off eighth-seed Richland on Wednesday night, a victory in the state tournament’s opening round that pushes the Vikings into this weekend’s 4A quarterfinals.

Freshman forward Kenzie Thomson’s header in the 46th minute handed Puyallup a two-goal lead, enough cushion for a gutsy road win at Bomber Field.

Richland struck first in the 11th minute — but Puyallup’s Kiera Huetten netted a 12th-minute goal on a feed from Ella Bach that instantly erased the Bomber lead.

Then, Huetten repaid the favor. She assisted a Bach goal five minutes later, in the 17th, that gave Puyallup a 2-1 lead at intermission.

The Vikings meet either No. 14 Eastmont or No. 3 Gonzaga Prep in this weekend’s quarterfinal. Location and start time are to be determined.

No. 5 Curtis 1, No. 12 Camas 0

Sophia Mayne drilled a 56th-minute cross from Shelby Duah that lifted Curtis to victory in the opening round of the state tournament.

Mayne’s goal was the game-winner, enough support for an unrelenting Vikings defense that blanked Camas on Wednesday night.

“That’s what we pride ourselves on,” Curtis coach Frank Hankel said of his defense. “We’ve built from the back here, and we really pride ourselves on shutouts. Team shutouts.

“We’ve focused on that a ton. It was a whole group effort along that back line tonight.”

Curtis’ win — and Mayne’s goal — propels the Vikings into the 4A quarterfinals. Curtis will host No. 13 Issaquah this weekend. The date and time are to be determined.

A trio of programs represent the 4A SPSL in the state quarterfinals: Curtis, Puyallup, and Sumner.

No. 1 Skyline 4, No. 16 Rogers (Puyallup) 0

Skyline, the bracket’s top seed and state’s reigning 4A champion, blanked Rogers to advance in the state tournament on Wednesday night.

Skyline’s title defense continues into the quarterfinals at the expense of Rogers, whose season ends at 11-6-4.

2A

No. 2 Fife 4, No. 15 Clarkston 0

Fife’s perfect season lives on.

Sophomore forward Ariana Vaeao scored near the 20th minute, and the Trojans piled on a trio of goals in the second half to blank Clarkston in the 2A state tournament’s first round.

The numbers are staggering: Fife (24-0) remains unbeaten, and Wednesday’s win was their 17th consecutive shutout. The league- and district-champion Trojans have surrendered one goal throughout the entire season, back on Sept. 19.

“We have a defense that’s been building together for years now,” Fife coach Ryann Waldman said. “And they’ve just found their thing. Kali Ginnis, the sweeper, she’s incredible. She leads the defense, and knows exactly where they need to be. They’ve gelled to the point where they can play off of each other perfectly.”

Senior midfielder Emma Teem scored early in the second half, doubling Fife’s lead; midfielder Bella Gonzales and forward Peyton Holle added late insurance.

Fife will host No. 7 Ridgefield in a 4A quarterfinal this weekend. Start times are to be determined.

No. 3 Columbia River 1, No. 14 Steilacoom 0

Columbia River’s Ivy Henderson converted a fourth-minute header for a near-instant lead, and the Rapids silenced Steilacoom to advance through Wednesday night’s first round.

Henderson attacked Elise Maffeo’s corner kick and delivered an early goal that became the game-winner. Columbia River tried another seven corner kicks in the second half but never converted another, per The Columbian’s Will Denner.

Columbia River will host No. 11 R.A. Long in a 2A quarterfinal this weekend.

Steilacoom’s season ends at 13-7-1.

GIRLS SOCCER

WIAA State Championships

First Round

4A

No. 2 Sumner 1, No. 15 Kamiak 0

The Spartans just won their ninth straight shutout.

Sustained dominance continues -- freshman Brooklyn Johnson’s goal in the 66th minute erased a scoreless draw, and the Spartans outlasted Kamiak in the first round of the state tournament.

“The ball just popped out to Brooklyn… and she drove it on-frame and it went in,” head coach Robi Turley said. “Just calm, collected.”

And in Johnson’s first-ever state tournament game, to boot. The Spartans haven’t lost, nor have they allowed a goal, since Oct. 9.

Sumner’s goalkeeping duo of Kennedy Jackson (soph.) and Devon Bankers (fr.) split time on Tuesday night at Sunset Stadium, both contributing to the shutout.

“I have so much confidence in them, that I can take risks going forward,” Turley said. “They’re not stingy. They’re going to make a team earn it.”

Sumner’s win secured a trip to the 4A state quarterfinals on Nov. 10-11, which they will host. Start times and opponents are to be determined.

Play-In

3A

No. 16 Bonney Lake 2, No. 17 Southridge 1

Bonney Lake blanked Southridge in the second half and emerged from a late draw to advance in the state tournament, now officially one of 16 programs remaining.

The Panthers travel to No. 1 Bellevue on Friday for a 6 p.m. start in the first round at Bellevue High School.

No. 13 Oak Harbor 4, No. 20 Kentlake 0

Oak Harbor cruised to victory on Tuesday night, a convincing shutout that pushed the Wildcats through the play-in round.

Oak Harbor meets No. 4 Lakeside (Seattle) in the first round on Friday morning at 11 a.m.

Kentlake’s season ends at 9-9.
