High school girls soccer: The News Tribune’s 2023 All-Area team
First- and second-team selections for The News Tribune’s 2023 All-Area girls soccer team.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Brooklyn Lee, Stadium, sr. — A natural outside back, Lee played forward for Stadium and was a matchup issue for opposing defenses all season, leading the Tigers to the state tournament and the program’s best season since 2017. The 3A PCL MVP scored 20 goals and tallied 10 assists. Louisville commit.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Robi Turley, Sumner — Coached the Spartans to an 18-2-1 record, the 4A SPSL title and the Class 4A state tournament quarterfinal round.
FIRST TEAM
FORWARDS
Ella Bach, Puyallup, soph. — Only subbed out twice on the entire season, Bach was a workhorse for the Vikings, racking up 11 goals and 10 assists for the Vikings. Two-time 4A SPSL first-team selection.
Alyce Chappelle, Rogers, jr. — First-team 4A SPSL selection built on her strong sophomore campaign with another good season this fall, scoring 17 goals and adding 12 assists. Two-time TNT All-Area selection.
Elizabeth Hayes, Gig Harbor, soph. — No one was more dangerous in front of the net for Gig Harbor this season than Hayes, who scored 20 goals and tallied 13 assists for the Tides. First-team 3A SSC selection.
Ari Hill, Sumner, sr. — The 4A SPSL co-offensive player of the year was a game-changer and could single-handedly take over games when healthy, with speed and skill few players could match. Scored nine goals and had two assists for the Spartans. Oregon State commit.
Jaylee Reynolds, Bonney Lake, jr. — One of the most dangerous attacking players in the league, Reynolds racked up 29 goals for the Panthers this fall. 3A PCL first-team selection.
Caitlyn Riggs, Auburn Riverside, jr. — The 3A NPSL offensive player of the year is a central defender on her club team, but moved up top for the Ravens, her height and speed making her a difficult matchup. Scored 16 goals and had five assists, leading Auburn Riverside back to the state tournament. Fourth all-time on the program’s career scoring list. Idaho commit.
MIDFIELDERS
Sophie Blake, Gig Harbor, sr. — Perhaps Blake’s best trait was her calmness on the ball and ability to organize Gig Harbor’s midfield shape. The 3A SSC first-team selection also spent some time on the back line for the Tides. Scored 11 goals and had four assists this fall. UW commit and two-time TNT All-Area selection.
Sophia Mayne, Curtis, jr. — When the lights shone brightest, Mayne played her best, scoring goals in both of Curtis’ state tournament games. 4A SPSL first-team selection and two-time team captain scored eight goals and had four assists this fall.
Ava Morton, Sumner, sr. — 4A SPSL co-offensive player of the year was praised by coach Robi Turley for her poise, vision and distribution. Dangerous going forward in the attack and a tough defender, Morton scored nine goals and tallied six assists for the Spartans. UW commit and two-time TNT All-Area selection.
Kayden Perigo, Capital, sr. — Drew constant double and triple teams in league play on her way to being named the 3A SSC offensive player of the year. A truly attack-minded player, Perigo scored 22 goals and tallied seven assists for the Cougars. Jacksonville University commit.
Kayla Pope, Tumwater, soph. — Technical ability and positional versatility made Pope the 2A EvCo MVP this season. T-Birds’ coach Brett Bartlett calls Pope the team’s ‘Swiss army knife.’ Had 15 goals and six assists this fall, playing primarily right back for Tumwater.
Jayda Sparks, Kentridge, sr. — Consistently dominated the midfield for the Chargers, leading Kentridge to the 4A state tournament. First-team 4A NPSL selection scored 11 goals. Eastern Washington signee.
DEFENDERS
Kali Ginnis, Fife, sr. — 2A SPSL co-MVP played center back for a Fife team that posted a 21-1 record, including 19 shutouts, and allowed only two goals all season on the way to undefeated 2A SPSL and 2A District 2/3 championships and an appearance in the 2A state quarterfinals. Also added five goals and nine assists.
Ivy Korbal, Curtis, jr. — 4A SPSL defensive player of the year led a Vikings defense that recorded 13 shutouts in 20 contests and advanced to the 4A state quarterfinals.
Emma Krueger, Peninsula, sr. — Seahawks center back has been a leader on Peninsula’s defense throughout her career, and paced a defense that posted 10 shutouts this fall on the way to appearances in the 3A District 3/4 title game and 3A state first round. 3A SSC first-team selection.
Maddie Long, Stadium, sr. — 3A PCL defensive MVP led a Stadium defense that recorded eight shutouts this season. Tigers didn’t lose a contest in 3A PCL play, won the 3A District 3/4 title and advanced to the 3A state first round.
Rachael Remnet, Central Kitsap, sr. — 3A SSC defensive player of the year was the leader of a Central Kitsap defense that tallied eight shutouts this season. Cougars advanced to the 3A state play-in round.
Olivia Sides, Tahoma, jr. — 4A NPSL defensive player of the year led a Bears defense that posted 10 shutouts. Tahoma advanced to the 4A District 3/4 title game and 4A state first round.
GOALKEEPER
Rory Murry, Auburn Riverside, sr. — 3A NPSL defensive player of the year collected 115 saves and posted 13 shutouts in 18 contests this season, bringing her career shutout total to 42. Ravens swept their 3A NPSL opponents and advanced to the 3A state first round. Two-time TNT All-Area pick. Wyoming signee.
