4A girls state hoops: 5 players who stood out on Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome

Eight teams squared off in four games in the Class 4A girls high school state tournament bracket in the opening round on Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome. Here are the results and our picks for five players who stood out.

No. 6 Bothell 55, No. 11 Emerald Ridge 46

No. 7 Tahoma 53, No. 10 Bellarmine Prep 38

No. 5 Davis 59, No. 12 Eastlake 54

No. 8 Gonzaga Prep 49, No. 9 Lake Stevens 46

FAB FIVE

McKylee Hawkins, Bothell — Poured in a double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds, including three second-half 3-pointers to lift Bothell over Emerald Ridge in the first game of the day.

Lily Cavanaugh, Tahoma — Scored a team-high 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the field and made 5-of-6 free throw attempts for the Bears in win over Bellarmine Prep. Also pulled down four rebounds.

Cheyenne Hull, Davis — One of the state’s best freshmen wings had a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds in a win over defending state champion Eastlake, making 5-of-15 shots from the field and 7-of-10 free throws. Also had three steals.

Aylah Cornwall, Gonzaga Prep — Bullpups’ super freshman brought the win home for Gonzaga Prep with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, converting 5-of-6 free throws in the final 1 minute, 3 seconds of the contest against Lake Stevens.

Tatum Wood, Eastlake — Forward did everything she could to will Eastlake to a come-from-behind win against Davis, scoring 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor and 4-of-10 shooting from 3-point range.

Lily Cavanuagh, Tahoma: We just had a lot more energy today. I think sometimes we get a little comfortable, then we have to ramp it back up. It’s an energy thing we’re always working on as a team.”
