A few South Sound programs won state championships this winter. Others were close. Which team was the best this winter?
Over 44,000 total votes were cast by TNT readers this week. The winner, with over 19,000 votes cast in its favor, is the Orting wrestling team.
The Cardinals won the Class 2A team wrestling title at Mat Classic XXXV at the Tacoma Dome with 299.5 points, well ahead of second-place Othello (120). Dominic Thomas (113), A.J. Salguero (126), Bryan Dickerson (132), Quentin Harding (138) and Levi DiCugno (175) won individual titles for Orting.

Annie Wright boys basketball — So close for the Gators, who finished runner-up to Zillah in the 1A state boys basketball tournament after a heartbreaking 47-45 in the state championship game in Yakima. Finished with a 24-3 record.
Bonney Lake girls basketball — Advanced to the 3A state tournament quarterfinals at the Tacoma Dome after a win over 3A PCL peer Lincoln on the first day. Lost to state runner-up Mead in the quarterfinals. Finished with a 20-6 record.
Emerald Ridge girls bowling — Took second place overall at the Class 4A state girls bowling tournament, just behind first-place Kamiakin. Monica Pollock bowled a 1,097 total.
Fife boys swimming — Took sixth place overall at the Class 2A state swim and dive meet at the King County Aquatic Center with 101 points. Junior Gordon Cannon won the 50-yard adaptive freestyle and 50-yard adaptive backstroke events.
Gig Harbor boys swimming — Took sixth place overall at the Class 3A state swim and dive meet at the King County Aquatic Center with 139 points. Senior Grant Huston won the 100 and 200-yard freestyle events.
Kentwood boys basketball — Finished in fourth place at the Class 4A state boys basketball tournament at the Tacoma Dome after beating Skyview 69-47 in a placing game.
Lincoln boys basketball — Abes were the story of the Tacoma Dome early in the Class 3A state boys basketball tournament after knocking off No. 1 seeded Auburn on the first day and advancing to the tournament quarterfinals. Finished with a 22-7 record.
Orting boys wrestling — Won the Class 2A team wrestling title at Mat Classic XXXV at the Tacoma Dome with 299.5 points, well ahead of second-place Othello (120). Dominic Thomas (113), A.J. Salguero (126), Bryan Dickerson (132), Quentin Harding (138) and Levi DiCugno (175) won individual titles for Orting.
Peninsula girls wrestling — Won the Class 3A/4A girls team wrestling title at Mat Classic XXXV at the Tacoma Dome with 122 points, edging second-place Curtis. Mira Sonnen (140) and Bailey Parker (145) won individual titles for the Seahawks.
Spanaway Lake girls bowling — Took second place overall at the Class 3A state girls bowling tournament. Tamia Yeager took first place overall individually with a 1,256 total.
Sumner girls basketball — Advanced to the Class 4A state tournament semifinals, losing a close game to eventual champion and this year’s 4A juggernaut Camas. Spartans finished in fifth place overall in the tournament and posted a 23-4 season record. Sophomore Olivia Collins and freshman Kawehi Borden should have Sumner in contention again in the coming years.
Tahoma boys wrestling — Won the Class 4A team wrestling title at Mat Classic XXXV at the Tacoma Dome with 193.5 points, edging defending champion Chiawana (169). Crew Lambro (106) won an individual title for the Bears.
Tahoma boys swimming — Took fourth place overall at the Class 4A state swim and dive meet at the King County Aquatic Center with 161 points.
White River girls basketball — Took fourth place in the 2A state tournament in Yakima after beating Archbishop Murphy in the placing game, 47-42. Finished with a 21-5 overall record.
