Winners of The News Tribune’s Athletes of the Week (Nov. 4-9)
Voting is now closed for The News Tribune’s Athletes of the Week for contests played between Nov. 4-9. Thanks to everyone who voted and supported local student-athletes.
This week’s winners are:
Jonny Comoza, Mount Tahoma football and Karrin Heikkila, Gig Harbor soccer
Comoza rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries in a win over Mount Spokane on Saturday, sending the T-Birds to the Class 3A state tournament. Heikkila scored two goals and was involved in the buildup of a third score in Gig Harbor’s 3-1 win over crosstown rival Peninsula in the 3A District 3/4 girls soccer championship game at Mount Tahoma on Thursday.

FOOTBALL
Malcolm Akuffo, Emerald Ridge — Jaguars RB handled 16 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown in 37-22 playoff win over Skyline.
Bryson Allen, Franklin Pierce — Lead running back erupted for 171 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, adding five tackles on defense in 76-14 playoff win over Columbia River.
Louis Chevalier, Enumclaw — Hornets RB exploded for 224 yards and three touchdowns on just eight carries (28 YPC), adding two receptions for 68 yards and a receiving score in Enumclaw’s 77-0 playoff win over Southridge.
Tayven Collins, Cascade Christian — From now on, consider the Cougars’ 45-11 win over Castle Rock the “Tayven Collins Game,” because the sophomore receiver/safety’s name covered every stat sheet. Collins handled 10 carries for 184 yards and a touchdown, caught five passes for 184 yards and two scores, adding a two-point conversion (368 scrimmage yards). On defense, Collins tackled 17 (2 TFL) with two sacks and an interception.

Mikkah Cordero, Mount Tahoma — T-Birds QB completed 10-of-15 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns (no interceptions), adding three carries for 18 yards and a score in 35-13 playoff win over Mount Spokane.
Andy Cortez, Federal Way — Eagles QB completed 11-of-14 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns in Federal Way’s 38-10 playoff win over Ferndale.
Kyson Douglas, Puyallup — Workhorse RB handled 30 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown in 27-14 playoff win over Eastlake, Puyallup’s fifth straight.
Elijah Durr, Mount Tahoma — Perimeter standout caught three passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns, adding four tackles and a pass deflection on defense in 35-13 playoff win over Mount Spokane.
Devon Forehand, Kennedy Catholic — Lancers QB completed 8-of-11 passes for 246 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions in Kennedy Catholic’s 58-3 win over Mount Si. He carried twice for 18 yards.
Maurice Gosby, Lincoln — Abes RB excelled in the lead role vacated by an injured Jadeon Scranton, erupting for a season-high 134 rushing yards and a touchdown (20 carries) in Lincoln’s 33-20 playoff win over Rainier Beach.
Spencer Holloway, Decatur — Gators QB completed 16-of-22 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns, adding 10 carries for 173 rushing yards and two scores on the ground in Decatur’s 39-29 playoff win over Bishop Blanchet.
Steele Isaacs, Sumner — Spartans RB took eight carries for 119 yards and three touchdowns in Sumner’s big win over Auburn.
Indiana Jones, Kennedy Catholic — Lancers RB ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries in Kennedy Catholic’s playoff win over Mount Si, adding four receptions for 102 yards (204 scrimmage).
Sione Kaho, Lincoln — Abes QB completed 11-of-17 passes for 121 yards, adding eight carries for 17 yards and two rushing touchdowns to guide Lincoln over Rainier Beach in the opening round of the playoffs, 33-20.
Logan Lipscomb, Emerald Ridge — Had a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown in win over Skyline, sending the Jaguars back to the 4A state tournament.
Parker Mady, Curtis — Two-way standout caught seven passes for 80 yards and a touchdown and snagged three interceptions on defense, including a 38-yard touchdown return in 28-0 road playoff win at Glacier Peak.
Toetu Moliga, Lakes — Lancers RB gashed White River for 162 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just 10 carries (16.2 YPC), adding three tackles on defense in 52-0 playoff win.
Labor Day Nielsen, Fife — Trojans DT tackled four and sacked two in Fife’s playoff win over Ridgefield.
Ethan Rodriguez, Rochester — Rushed for 240 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries in loss to Life Christian.
Marcus Ronquillo, Yelm — Tornados freshman RB solidified the ground game with 25 carries for 160 yards in 24-20 playoff loss to Richland.
Vadym Shemedyuk, Fife — Senior RB piled 255 scrimmage yards and two rushing touchdowns in Fife’s 34-7 playoff win over Ridgefield.
Cash Short, Tumwater — T-Birds LB logged five tackles (1 TFL) with a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown in Tumwater’s runaway playoff win over Renton.
Zamarie Tellez, Federal Way — Eagles WR/CB secured five receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns, adding an interception on defense in Federal Way’s 38-10 playoff win over Ferndale.
Junior Teregeyo, Franklin Pierce — Cardinals RB/LB handled eight carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns, adding an interception, four tackles, and two pass deflections on defense in Franklin Pierce’s 76-14 playoff win over Columbia River.
FALL SPORTS
Cooper Boyle, Tahoma cross country — Won Saturday’s WIAA State Cross Country Championships (4A Boys) with a 5,000-meter time of 14:57.2 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Will Carroll, Annie Wright cross country — Won Saturday’s WIAA State Cross Country Championships (1A Boys) with a 5,000-meter time of 15:28.4 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Mae Cocke, Sumner soccer — The junior’s goal in the 51st minute lifted the Spartans over Curtis, 1-0, in Thursday’s District ¾ 4A girls soccer championship.
Jax Corvin, Lakes cross country — Finished ninth at Saturday’s WIAA State Cross Country Championships (3A Boys) with a 5,000-meter time of 15:35.8 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Layne Dent, Cascade Christian volleyball — In three games (nine sets), the senior outside hitter tallied 54 kills, 27 digs, eight blocks, and six aces in Cascade Christian’s wins over Annie Wright and Bellevue Christian and loss to Curtis.
Karrin Heikkila, Gig Harbor soccer — Scored two goals and was involved in the buildup of a third score in Gig Harbor’s 3-1 win over crosstown rival Peninsula in the 3A District 3/4 girls soccer championship game at Mount Tahoma on Thursday.
Elektra Higgins, Peninsula cross country — Finished runner-up at Saturday’s WIAA State Cross Country Championships (3A Girls) with a 5,000-meter time of 16:58.5 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Sydney Kosa, Olympia cross country — Finished fifth at Saturday’s WIAA State Cross Country Championships (4A Girls) with a 5,000-meter time of 18:16.5 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Jenica Walling, Cascade Christian volleyball — Instrumental in district wins over Annie Wright and Bellevue Christian. Had 11 kills, 13 digs against Annie Wright and 13 kills and 14 digs against Bellevue Christian.
Latham West, Bonney Lake cross country — Finished third at Saturday’s WIAA State Cross Country Championships (4A Girls) with a 5,000-meter time of 18:02.9 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
