DID YOU KNOW?
▪ Only 22 total wrestlers in state history have captured four individual state titles at the Mat Classic, but five more can add their names to the record books this weekend: Quentin Harding (Orting), AJ Salguero Jr. (Orting), Kiyanno Zuniga (Toppenish), Libby Roberts (University girls), and Faith Tarrant (Prairie girls).
▪ We’re in for a head-to-head clash for the 2A team title between heavyweight programs in Orting and Toppenish. The defending 1A-champion Wildcats rose to 2A last fall, meaning this weekend should answer the question: Who’s got the top program in the state? The programs met in Orting on Dec. 27 for the first dual meet between the longtime rivals, and the Cardinals prevailed by a razor-thin margin, 33-32. Orting brings 24 wrestlers and Toppenish brings 17 wrestlers to Tacoma for a rematch on the biggest stage.
▪ Orting (2A) can win four consecutive team titles for the first time since the Cardinals completed the feat as a 1A program from 2009-12.
