The News Tribune’s 2025 All-Area boys basketball team
Each year, with input from local coaches, The News Tribune selects its All-Area boys basketball team.
This year, nine high schools from the South Sound are represented by players and coaches selected to the first and second teams.
The 12 spots, broken down by leagues, are 4A South Puget Sound League (five), 4A North Puget Sound League (two), 1A Nisqually (two), 3A North Puget Sound League (one), 3A Puget Sound League (one), and 2A South Puget Sound League (one).
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
JEREMIAH HARSHMAN
Annie Wright
Guard, 6-1, sr.
At the very foundation of Annie Wright’s 1A championship run was this quintessential point guard, a smooth scorer regularly tasked with defending the opponent’s best player. Harshman dropped 18 points with eight rebounds and eight assists per game, an unselfish star with a basketball IQ beyond his years. 1A Nisqually MVP.
COACH OF THE YEAR
KEVIN OLSON
Puyallup
Guided the 4A SPSL’s top program to the Class 4A state championship game at the Tacoma Dome, which was the program’s first state championship game appearance since 1971. At the Tacoma Dome, Puyallup collected wins over Davis of Yakima, Mount Si and West Valley of Yakima before falling to Gonzaga Prep by two points in the title game. The Vikings finished the season with a 23-8 record.
FIRST TEAM
DREW JONES
Puyallup
Guard, 6-1, sr.
They’ll be saying his name in Puyallup for years — the clutch scorer and 4A State Tournament MVP put the city on his back and led the Vikings to the state championship game for the first time since 1971. Jones averaged 20.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game and claimed the 4A SPSL title at Tacoma Community College. 4A SPSL North MVP is the only player in Puyallup history with 1,000+ career points and 300+ career assists.
JAVON BARBEE
Franklin Pierce
Guard, 6-4, sr.
The South Sound’s leading scorer was a walking bucket with near-double-double averages (28.1 ppg, 9 rpg) as Barbee guided Franklin Pierce to an undefeated 2A SPSL title and 2A state quarterfinals appearance. Three-level scorer and natural finisher added four steals and three assists per game. 2A SPSL MVP.
DANIEL JOHNSON
Auburn
Guard, 6-3, jr.
When the lights were brightest, Johnson put the Trojans on his back, knocking down big shot after big shot in the Class 4A state tournament at the Tacoma Dome, earning an all-tournament second team nod. 4A NPSL first-team selection guided the Trojans to the District 3/4 title and the tournament’s No. 2 seed, averaging 18.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.2 steals.
MARTIN KAUPANGER
Annie Wright
Forward/Guard, 6-5, sr.
Gators head coach Dom Williams calls him “Mr. Do-It-All,” a 6-5 guard able to score at will, block shots and posterize the unfortunate opponent who gets in his way. The 1A Nisqually first-team selection piled up 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks per game throughout Annie Wright’s 1A title run. Indiana State signee.
DAVION SHAREEF-DULANEY
Lincoln
Guard, 6-1, fr.
The Abes figure to return their entire starting five after a run to the 3A state quarterfinals, and this emerging freshman has Tacoma dreaming of what three more years of Shareef-Dulaney could mean for the Lincoln program. The 3A PSL Narrows MVP and all-around playmaker took the South Sound by storm, averaging 16.5 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals per game.
SECOND TEAM
G Sebastian Arius, Auburn Mountainview, sr.
F Jamaize McGriff, Emerald Ridge, jr.
G Matt Lindblom, Olympia, sr.
G Brandon Tagle, Kentwood, jr.
F/P Will Nasinec, Puyallup, jr.
