FRIDAY’S RESULTS (APRIL 25)

4A SPSL

SUMNER 14, BETHEL 0

Five pitchers, five innings — no hits.

That’s right: It’s a combined no-no for the Spartans. Garrett Levenhagen, Preston Coleman, Ryder Peterson, Kasey Turnbull, and Owen Tobin each threw one hitless inning, and Sumner blanked Bethel, 14-0, on Friday afternoon.

Sumner exploded for nine runs in the first inning, and the Spartans cruised for their fifth win in six games. Bryce Carl sparked the early rout with a line-drive, RBI single that scored Xander Cypher.

Cypher went 2-for-2 and added a run-scoring single later in the first inning. Eight Spartans tallied at least one RBI.

PUYALLUP 15, YELM 3

Gage Thompson hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, and Puyallup’s bats powered their 19th straight win on Friday afternoon.

The undefeated Vikings are the nation’s No. 3 team, per MaxPreps’ weekly rankings, and piled 13 hits in Friday’s blowout. Thompson plated a team-high four RBI and drew one of seven Vikings walks.

Puyallup’s freshman starter Beau Hale threw five solid innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts. Ryan Judge earned the save with two shutout relief innings.

Top pitching prospect Mason Pike went 3-for-5 with a triple and scored three runs.

Yelm’s Wesley Thompson lifted a solo home run in the third inning, and Tornados DH Barrett Schnetz added two doubles.

GIG HARBOR 5, PENINSULA 0

Quentin Bockhorn silenced Peninsula via complete-game shutout, and Gig Harbor blanked their crosstown rivals in Friday’s 5-0 win.

Bockhorn, a senior right-hander, scattered five hits over seven strong innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

Scoreless in the fifth, Gig Harbor pounced for two runs when Daniel Porras hit an RBI triple and Ethan Mar notched an RBI single in consecutive at-bats.

The Tides added three insurance runs in the seventh when Mar notched his second RBI single of the afternoon and Cole Krilich’s single to right field plated two more.

Gig Harbor (17-1) rebounded from Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to Central Kitsap, their first and only loss this season.

KENTRIDGE 9, AUBURN 2

Levi Baca’s two hits sparked Kentridge’s convincing, 9-2 win over Auburn in a 4A NPSL clash on Thursday afternoon.

Baca plated Kentridge’s first run with a second-inning single, and the Chargers scored three runs in each of the third and fourth innings to cruise toward a sixth consecutive victory.

Kentridge starter Landon Todd earned the win, surrendering four hits and two earned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts across four solid innings. Beckham Gerber slammed the door with three shutout relief innings (one hit allowed).

Kentridge’s Manny Harris tripled in the third inning and finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.

WEDNESDAY’S RESULTS (APRIL 23)

4A SPSL

OLYMPIA 1, GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN 0

It’s a no-hitter in Olympia: Trace Pruitt (2 IP) and Peyton Crass (5 IP) threw a combined no-no, Silas Duerre snapped a scoreless tie with a walk-off single in the seventh inning, and the Bears toppled Graham-Kapowsin in dramatic, 1-0 fashion on Wednesday afternoon.

Could you script a series sweep any better?

With the bases loaded in the final frame, Duerre drove the game-winner to left field — both avoiding extra innings and cementing a combined gem from Pruitt and Crass. Together, the Bears duo walked one with 12 strikeouts, facing just one batter over the minimum.

“Peyton’s got some unique characteristics,” Olympia head coach Derek Weldon said. “He’s not a very tall guy. He gets down the hill and the release height is pretty low, but he’s firm and it really plays well, especially the top of the zone.”

Pruitt, the starter, exited after two innings when “something didn’t feel right” with his right (throwing) arm. He’ll receive an MRI before Olympia can project a return date.

Still, the Bears continue a midseason surge, winners in seven of their last eight games and now tied for second (Sumner) behind undefeated-Puyallup (17-0) in the 4A SPSL standings.

“We’ve pitched really well,” Weldon said. “We’ve got to get better but we’re defending pretty well. There’s a lot of good arms in our league, and it’s hard to score runs. We’re just trying to put quality at-bats together and execute in some of the situational areas. A lot of these games, it feels like if we get one or two, we’ve got a pretty good shot.”

SUMNER 9, EMERALD RIDGE 2

Xander Cypher delivered a three-run homer, Wyatt Plyler went seven strong frames, and Sumner topped Emerald Ridge in Wednesday’s SPSL rivalry.

Cypher’s three-run blast capped a four-run sixth inning after Plyler grounded into an RBI fielder’s choice. Sumner’s designated hitter finished 1-for-4 with three RBI.

Sumner LF Bryce Carl cleared the bases with a three-run double in the fifth.

Plyler surrendered only three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts across a complete game. He threw 95 pitches, 61 for strikes.

CURTIS 6, SOUTH KITSAP 1

Aiden Neideigh’s five strong frames powered Curtis over South Kitsap, 6-1, in Wednesday’s 4A SPSL rivalry.

The sophomore right-hander struck out six without a walk, allowing five hits and one unearned run while the Vikings offense added on.

Curtis scored twice in the third inning with help from Burke Shepard’s RBI single and Noah Potucek’s bases-loaded walk. The Vikings tacked on two more in the fourth when Micah Houston and Harlan Carrillo hit RBI doubles.

The win secured a two-game series sweep over South Kitsap this week, good for Curtis’ third straight win.

Curtis 2B Riley Angelo reached safely in all four plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with a double, triple, and two walks.

3A PSL

CAPITAL 7, PENINSULA 6

Gavin Dolan: Wednesday’s hero.

Down to their final out, Capital’s leadoff left fielder delivered a two-run, walk-off single that lifted the Cougars over first-place Peninsula in a rivalry between the PSL Nisqually’s top contenders.

Dolan’s line-drive single to center field put the finishing touches on a three-run comeback in the final frame. Dallas Phipps sparked the rally with a leadoff single in the seventh inning before Chase Waters was hit by a pitch and Isaac Linville walked to load the bases.

With one out, Cooper Huff drew a bases-loaded walk that cut into Peninsula’s lead, 6-5, and Dolan soon followed with the walk-off single that ended it.

“We finally got it going there the seventh inning,” Capital coach Brian Shannon said. “We hit a lot of balls right at them earlier in the game (but) got a couple guys on with good team at-bats to lead the seventh off.

“And then Gavin was able to come through.”

Dolan was 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI. Capital starter Lucas Redman threw four innings, allowing four hits and five runs with five walks and five strikeouts.

The Cougars’ walk-off win secured a two-game series split with Peninsula this week.

“It was a gritty win,” Shannon said. “We just kept chipping away and got it done.”

CENTRAL KITSAP 2, GIG HARBOR 0

Undefeated no more: Tristan Short’s complete-game shutout silenced the Tides in Wednesday night’s PSL rivalry, snapping Gig Harbor’s 16-game win streak to begin the campaign.

Central Kitsap’s Short scattered five hits and two walks over seven stellar frames, and the Cougars plated a pair of runs in the second inning to surprise the Puget Sound League (Narrows) leaders.

Mason Raty put Central Kitsap on the board with an RBI single in the second, and Nathan Manke lifted a sacrifice fly to left field for early insurance. It was all the Cougars needed with Short on the mound, who added two hits with a run scored at the plate.

Gig Harbor starter Nathan Cheek went 5 ⅓ frames, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with a walk and two strikeouts. Max Bergford added 1 ⅔ perfect relief innings.

SILAS 17, MOUNT TAHOMA 0

Silas catcher Max Yoder plated five runs, and the Rams cruised past Mount Tahoma in Wednesday’s Tacoma rivalry.

Yoder’s two-run singles in the third and fourth innings padded an early lead, and Rams right-hander Landon Smith tossed four shutout frames for Silas’ third straight win.

The Rams piled seven hits and eight runs in the third inning, capped by Carter Lystra’s hard-hit RBI single with two outs.
