TNT readers say this high school girls team was the best of 2024-25

Voting is now closed for The News Tribune’s High School Girls Team of the Year for 2024-25 seasons. Thanks to everyone who voted and supported local student-athletes.

The News Tribune’s High School Girls Team of the Year is:

Sumner basketball

Led by TNT All-Area player of the year Olivia Collins and first-team selection Kawehi Borden, Sumner posted a 25-5 record and advanced to the 4A state championship game, falling to Davis (Yakima) at the Tacoma Dome. Collected a regional round win over Davis a week earlier and beat Camas and Woodinville at the Tacoma Dome to advance to the championship game.

Curtis volleyball — Completed a perfect 27-0 season and beat Kennedy Catholic in the 4A state championship game. Tore through the 4A SPSL unblemished and won the 4A District 3/4 championship. Senior outside hitter Avery Cukjati was the TNT’s 2024 All-Area player of the year, racking up 323 kills (4.3 per set), 169 digs and 33 aces across 76 sets. Curtis dropped just seven sets all season.

North Thurston girls basketball — With its dynamic backcourt featuring Soraya Ogaldez and Shayla Cordis, the Rams posted an undefeated run through the 3A Puget Sound League, won the 3A District 3/4 title and advanced to the 3A state tournament semifinals, taking third place at the Tacoma Dome. Had a 28-game win streak before falling to Lakeside in the state semifinals.

Rainier cross country — Won the 1B/2B state cross country team title at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco in November with 71 points, edging out Pope John Paul II (72 points). Junior Jazzlyn Shumate was the team’s top finisher, coming in eighth place overall with a time of 19 minutes, 57.6 seconds.

Rogers softball — Posted a 25-5 record and saved the best for last as the No. 10 seed in the state tournament, advancing to the 4A state championship game, picking up wins over No. 7 Hanford, No. 15 Lake Stevens and No. 3 Issaquah before falling to top-seeded Skyview in the title game. Freshman ace Sierra Murray, who led the entire South Sound in strikeouts, was named the TNT’s 2025 All-Area player of the year, after compiling a 17-4 record with a 1.35 earned run average, 252 strikeouts and 79 walks in 155.1 innings pitched.
