ENUMCLAW 14, FEDERAL WAY 7
Paxton Patterson bullied his way in from 26 yards out in the final minute to help lift the Hornets to a 3A North Puget Sound League victory against the Eagles at Memorial Stadium.
Patterson, who injured his ankle in the first quarter of the season opener and missed the next two games, broke multiple tackles, showcasing his strength and speed while scoring with 32 seconds remaining to help Enumclaw stay undefeated and in the driver’s seat for the league title.
“He’s a big, strong, dynamic running back and he is a lot to deal with,” Enumclaw coach Mark Gunderson said. “There was good defense played by both teams. If their quarterback doesn’t go down at the end, who knows, it might have been headed to overtime.
“It was just a classic high school football game – it came down to the wire. That was worth the price of admission.”
Patterson carried the ball 16 times for 123 yards and the touchdown, while teammate Cole Chiechi ran 11 times for 59 yards and a touchdown.
Federal Way led 7-0 at halftime after Jay Sinclair reached across the goal line for a touchdown late in the first half, as both defenses played strong throughout. The Eagles finished with less than 200 yards of offense as Enumclaw showed its strong start on the defensive side of the ball is the real deal. The Hornets have now outscored opponents 189-21 this season.
“I’m really proud of our kids – they were down at half and they stayed in the fight and came out in the end,” Gunderson said. “I was concerned coming in – because we haven’t been tested since Week 1; it is one thing to talk about it and another thing to do it.
“Tonight, we got better.”
Graham-Kapowsin 61, Bonney Lake 34
AJ Tuivaiave threw a school-record eight touchdown passes as the Eagles got back to their high-flying ways on offense Thursday in a 4A South Puget Sound League matchup with the Panthers.
Tuivaiave broke his own single-game school record that he set last season, throwing for more than 300 yards on this record-setting night. He connected with Kase Betz seven times for four touchdowns and 190 yards.
“It’s a cool honor and an accomplishment,” Graham-Kapowsin coach Jeff Logan said of the record. “It’s not something we set out to do, but we knew the structure of the defense Bonney Lake had shown on film and we felt comfortable and confident in what we wanted to do passing the ball.”
The offensive explosion was the polar opposite of a week ago when Graham-Kapowsin scored just 14 points in a win against Emerald Ridge.
“We took a deep dive as a staff and really looked at how we can allow our kids to be the best they can be,” Logan said. “So, we went back to our fundamentals and had a great week of practice. Admittedly, it felt good to go out and click on offense. When you have guys like we do it makes our jobs look pretty easy.”
Bonney Lake quarterback Colten Miller impressed with his dual threat ability under center.
“Their quarterback looked like SEC Johnny Manziel out there making plays,” Logan said. “He did a lot of stuff for them that gave us fits. At the end of the day, I’m proud of our kids for finding a way.”
Stadium 46, Auburn 44
In an offensive shootout that lived up to its billing Thursday at Auburn High School, it was the Tigers who hung on for the 4A North Puget Sound League victory.
Darius Sam had two receiving touchdowns, while quarterback Kooper Tasler rushed for more than 100 yards and threw for 200 more.
“I’m a defensive guy, so it wasn’t great for me,” Stadium coach Patrick Johnson deadpanned. “It was a battle between two very good teams; just nonstop.”
Stadium scored with less than three minutes remaining to go up by 10, before Auburn scored with 30 seconds left. The Trojans onside kick attempt was recovered by the Tigers to seal the victory.
“We took some punches and finished,” Johnson said. “We talk about how sometimes it is the defense – we came in allowing 12 points a game; and sometimes it is the offense. This week, the offense picked us up.
“I looked it up online and I don’t think Stadium has been 4-0 since the internet was created. It has taken four years to build this and it is a great group.”
Lucas Whitehall-Gilkes had two touchdown receptions in the first quarter to help Auburn jump out to a 14-0 lead.
Steilacoom 34, Clover Park 12
Noah Maxwell scored three touchdowns Thursday to lead the Sentinels to a 2A South Puget Sound League victory at Harry E. Lang Stadium against the Timberwolves.
Maxwell scored from 6 and 32 yards out in the first quarter and then delivered the decisive blow in the second quarter, returning a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown after Clover Park had pulled within 14-6.
“It was a good little rebound for us with that return touchdown to kind of cement our lead,” Steilacoom coach Kyle Haller said. “Clover Park had some long drives, but our defense held pretty firm.”
Jaleo Johnson-Gonzalez caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Titus Kaeka late in the first half, while Justin Chang scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth to put Steilacoom ahead 34-6.
“I’m happy with the win. It’s not easy to get to 4-0 in any situation,” Haller said. “There are still a lot of things we can get better at – which is the exciting part. Just knowing that we are still very young and are learning and growing every week. I feel like there is a lot of potential still on tap and we will keep grinding and hopefully peak at the right time.”
