CURTIS 46, EMERALD RIDGE 13
Led by the one-two punch of Tyce Kinley and Ryland Geldermann, the Vikings rushed for more than 300 yards for a second consecutive week as they rolled past the Jaguars in 4A South Puget Sound League action in University Place.
Kinley rushed 15 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns, while Geldermann carried the ball nine times for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Curtis (5-1, 3-0) scored all of its touchdowns via defense or on the ground.
“That was a good all three phases of football game,” Curtis coach Darren McKay said. “We just played really well complementary wise in all three phases.”
Curtis led 14-6 late in the first half with Emerald Ridge driving when Burke Shepard intercepted a pass. After a penalty backed the Vikings up inside their own 20, they marched down the field and Luca Niebergall kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired for a 17-6 lead.
Coming out of the break, Emerald Ridge (2-4, 1-2) again was moving the ball when a pass was tipped by a defensive lineman and intercepted by Kinley who took it 54 yards to the house for a 25-6 lead. The rout was on.
“That was good situational football right before the end of the half,” McKay said.
Shepard ended with two interceptions for Curtis, which has now won three games in a row.
WHITE RIVER 17, FEDERAL WAY 0
Behind dominant line play on both sides of the ball, the Hornets handed the Eagles their first shutout of the season in a 3A North Puget Sound League game in Buckley.
The Hornets (6-0, 5-0) have generated a ton of offense this year with their screen game behind quarterback Chaz Strickland.
On Thursday, though, Federal Way (3-3, 3-2) forced Strickland and White River to make an adjustment and run the ball.
“We just loaded up and ran the ball. We ran ISO at them until they broke,” White River coach Wyatt Evenson said. “We did our best to hide our throws, but as soon as we saw their defensive line was making good tackles on our tunnel screens we decided it was time to switch it up.
“We ran inside zone and ISO and had a couple of successful tush pushes – which we just installed (Wednesday) – that is a tribute to this team. We can beat you in a lot of different ways and we are big enough to run the ball as well.”
Bo Burbank and Charlie Robbins anchored the front on both sides of the ball, while Palmer Beus had three sacks and kicked a field goal.
“This is just a tribute to this senior class,” Evenson said. “They were 1-8 as freshman and as sophomores, we asked them to step up into big roles. They played in those crucial moments and now they are seniors and they just balled out for us tonight. They are the best because they are competitors. They play dodge ball like it is Game 7 of the World Series. They are just those types of kids.”
FRANKLIN PIERCE 53, STEILACOOM 6
Bryson Allen rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cardinals to a big victory over the host Sentinels in 2A South Puget Sound League action.
The South Sound leader in rushing yards and touchdowns continued his strong season to help lead Franklin Pierce (4-2, 3-1) to its second consecutive victory after a heart-breaking loss to Orting.
“We take a lot of pride in being physical and gritty – that’s what we want to be known for,” Franklin Pierce coach Trevor Hanson said. “Steilacoom’s a really good football team; they are well-coached and athletic and we have a ton of respect for their players. I’m proud of how our guys continue to respond week after week with effort, discipline and togetherness.”
Jeremiah Orcutt added 49 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while Ja’mire Ford and Anthony Lomiga added touchdowns. Lomiga also rushed eight times for 103 yards.
“Our defense is really starting to come along, playing faster, more confident and doing a great job of playing up to the standard,” Hanson said. “It’s fun to see that side of the ball growing and complementing what we do offensively.”
