Week 7: High school football games to watch in the South Sound, predictions

Read team previews and score predictions for five games across the South Sound in Week 7, plus our pick for the state game of the week.

Curtis running back Tyce Kinley (3) runs in a touchdown against the Lakes Lancers during the second half of the game at Harry Lang Stadium, on Friday, Sept. 19, 2025, in Lakewood, Wash.

Curtis Vikings (5-1) vs. Sumner Spartans (3-3)

7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at Sunset Chev Stadium

Sumner bounced back from its blowout loss to valley rival Puyallup with a 50-0 shutout of the Rogers Rams last week. Curtis also rolled, beating Emerald Ridge 46-13. Curtis has one of the 4A SPSL’s best defensive lines and will have to be active in run defense against bruising Sumner RB Lance McGee. Similarly, Curtis has a legitimate rushing offense; Tyce Kinley rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s win. We think Sumner is due for a quality win.

TNT pick: Sumner 28, Curtis 21

Lakes running back Korben Reed (21) reacts to his rushing touchdown against the Curtis Vikings during the second half of the game at Harry Lang Stadium, on Friday, Sept. 19, 2025, in Lakewood, Wash.

Lakes Lancers (6-0) vs. Timberline Blazers (4-2)

7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 at South Sound Stadium

There’s a reason longtime Lakes coach Dave Miller gave the starting nod to freshman QB Jadis Lefono this fall — he’s a playmaker. Lefono is maturing on schedule; last week, he completed an efficient 14-of-18 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown, also rushing for a touchdown in a blowout win over Peninsula. After a loss to Capital, Timberline bounced back with a 45-0 win over North Thurston last week. Running back Cooper Jones (535 yards, seven TDs on 93 carries) is the workhorse back for the Blazers. We could see Timberline keeping things interesting, but ultimately think Lakes has too much talent all over the field and pulls away in the second half.

TNT pick: Lakes 34, Timberline 20

Mount Tahoma T-Birds (6-0) vs. Gig Harbor Tides (4-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at Roy Anderson Field

Mount Tahoma’s quest for an undefeated 3A PSL title continues across the Narrows, when the T-Birds bring a stable of running backs to Gig Harbor for a 3A PSL bout with the Tides. If you’re a fan of talented runners, this could be a matchup made in heaven: All three T-Birds RBs are averaging at least seven yards per carry, headlined by Naesirhc White’s 639 yards and six touchdowns. Mount Tahoma’s run game plows through defenses head-on; Gig Harbor’s Wing-T run game offers a layer of deception and creativity. We like what we’ve seen from first-year head coach Jeff Scoma’s Tides this fall, but consider this Mount Tahoma team too talented to falter.

TNT pick: Mount Tahoma 35, Gig Harbor 17

Bellarmine’s Ben Heisel (8) catches the ball in the end zone for a touchdown against Mount Tahoma on Friday, Oct. 10, 2025, at Mount Tahoma in Tacoma, Wash.

Lincoln Abes (3-3) vs. Bellarmine Prep Lions (4-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at Memorial Field

Lincoln boasted three 100-yard rushers in last week’s 47-14 win at Silas, headlined by RB Jadeon Scranton’s 172 yards and two scores (on just five carries!) — a shining example of what makes this offense so potent outside of strong-armed QB Sione Kaho. They’ll visit Bellarmine Prep next, who saw their four-game win streak snapped by Mount Tahoma in Week 6. Lions QB Birk Johnston has been effective with both his arms and legs, but we’ll roll with the Abes in this city rivalry.

TNT pick: Lincoln 28, Bellarmine Prep 20

Annie Wright wide receiver Charlie Finch (1) reacts to a touchdown pass during the first half of the game against the Life Christian Eagles at Stadium High School, on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2025, in Tacoma, Wash.

Cascade Christian Cougars (6-0) vs. Annie Wright Gators (5-1)

5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at Stadium Bowl

Is there more of a Swiss Army knife in the South Sound than Cascade Christian’s Tayven Collins? Division-I offers have rolled in for the three-star safety, and it’s easy to see why: Collins has completed 11-of-11 pass attempts for three touchdowns at quarterback. He’s averaging seven yards per carry with four touchdowns on the ground, adding 18 receptions for 281 yards and four scores through the air. On defense? The junior has 49 tackles (two for loss), three interceptions, two sacks, and a fumble recovery. He’ll guide a high-powered Cougars offense into Stadium Bowl, when Cascade Christian visits Annie Wright in the 1A Nisqually. The Gators feature UW commit Ta’a Malu on a defensive line allowing just six points per game this fall, but we’ll pick the Cougars to remain undefeated.

TNT pick: Cascade Christian 31, Annie Wright 21

STATE GAME OF THE WEEK

Archbishop Murphy tight end Jack Sievers is tackled for a loss by Tumwater defensive lineman Malijah Tucker during Saturday’s 2A state football semifinal game at Tumwater District Stadium in Tumwater, Washington, on Nov. 30, 2024. Tumwater won the game, 42-0, to advance to next weekend’s state championship game at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

Lynden Lions (5-1) vs. Archbishop Murphy Wildcats (6-0)

7 p.m. Friday at Archbishop Murphy High School

If you were wondering if Archbishop Murphy was for real, any doubts were erased with last week’s 43-7 win over two-time defending 2A state champion Anacortes. The Wildcats are the biggest, nastiest team in 2A this season and the clear-cut favorite to win it all at Husky Stadium in December. Can perennial contender Lynden spoil the undefeated season? Not this week.

TNT pick: Archbishop Murphy 35, Lynden 24
