Sumner running back, state player of the year Lance McGee flips commitment

From the Sumner valley to The Palouse: Sumner High School running back Lance McGee has flipped his commitment to WSU after decommitting from Oregon State last week, he announced on his Instagram account.

McGee, who was The News Tribune’s state player of the year in 2025, was perhaps the state’s most dominant running back since Jonathan Stewart walked the halls of Timberline High School in Lacey. He rushed for 2,489 yards and 42 touchdowns on 251 carries in the fall, leading Sumner to back-to-back Class 4A state titles.

In a Class 4A state semifinal against No. 1 seed Puyallup, McGee rushed for 313 yards and five touchdowns. Somehow, he was even better a week later in the state championship game against Lake Stevens when he rushed for 368 yards and six touchdowns on 46 carries — all three marks now 4A state championship game records.

McGee played just one season for Keith Ross’ Sumner Spartans after transferring from Davis (Yakima) after his junior season.

McGee is considered a three-star recruit by 247sports.com and the No. 7 ranked player in Washington in the 2026 class.

It’s unclear whether he’ll play linebacker or running back in college. A source told The News Tribune that former Oregon State head coach Trent Bray — now the defensive coordinator at WSU — was the primary recruiter for McGee at WSU, which could indicate he’ll move back to defense. Either way, McGee’s commitment is a major recruiting win for first-year Cougars’ head coach Kirby Moore.
