Lincoln star hits 1K points on epic dunk; Auburn Mountainview beats Bellarmine

Like he’s done with everything since he arrived on campus as a freshman last year, Davion Shareef-Dulaney hit his first major milestone in style.

In the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s Class 3A District 3/4 semifinal game against Enumclaw at Mount Tahoma High, Lincoln’s star sophomore guard dribbled into the key and saw a Hornets defender standing underneath the hoop.

He elevated, quickly, throwing down a thunderous one-handed slam over the mismatched defender, bringing the crowd to its feet.

It just so happened to be the play that gave Shareef-Dulaney 1,000 career points. The dunk put him at 1,001 career points in his first two seasons, and the state tournament hasn’t even started yet.

“I didn’t even know I was gonna get it, but I feel like that’s the best way to get 1,000 points,” Shareef-Dulaney told The News Tribune after the game. “I’m very proud of myself for that.”

As he should be. Friends, family, teammates and Lincoln’s coaching staff celebrated with a poster and “1,000” letters. Mount Tahoma athletic director Rhonda Stinson even let him cut down the net.

“There’s no more Davion fashion of a play to cement his mark on 1,000,” Lincoln coach Ryan Rogers said. “That does not surprise us. We see it every day in practice.

“For a sophomore to reach 1,000 before his sophomore season ended is pretty impressive. It’s a testament to his hard work and his teammates finding him open.”

Shareef-Dulaney followed up the dunk with a deep 3-pointer on the next possession, slamming the door on Enumclaw, which led at halftime over Lincoln. Lincoln went on to win, 54-48. Shareef-Dulaney scored a game-high 23 points, sending the Abes through to Saturday’s 3A district championship game, where Auburn Mountainview awaits.

“The dunk felt like it put the game away and then coming down and hitting that big triple, it just felt really good,” Shareef-Dulaney said.

Enumclaw was paced by Kannon Kuzaro’s 19 points. Lincoln sophomore forward Justus Holt scored 13 for the Abes and guard O’Shea Lamar added 10.

Lincoln outscored Enumclaw 18 to 11 in the third quarter, coming out with better energy out of the halftime break.

“We just needed to calm down, make sure we were playing good defense, not reaching and playing solid,” Shareef-Dulaney said.

And now Lincoln, which has been up and down over the course of the season, finds itself in the district championship game and is playing its best basketball at the right time.

“We know what we need to do to be successful, it’s just if we’re gonna come out and execute it,” Rogers said.

AUBURN MOUNTAINVIEW 58, BELLARMINE PREP 55

Bellarmine Prep had a chance to tie the game on its final possession, so Auburn Mountainview switched it up, going to a 1-3-1 zone after the timeout.

It worked. Bellarmine couldn’t find an open look on a 3-pointer and Auburn Mountainview hung on for the 58-55 win in the second semifinal game of the night.

“No team’s had the (1-3-1) on film, so we know we could pull that out in a clutch moment,” guard Kolven Posey said. “They didn’t know what to do against it. That’s exactly what our 1-3-1 was for, and we executed it perfectly.”

Posey, a smooth, natural scorer, was feeling it from the tip-off, pouring in 11 points in the first quarter en route to a game-high 22 points, including a pair of clutch layups in the fourth quarter.

Bellarmine’s defensive length has given opponents fits all season, but Posey and Auburn Mountainview found cracks.

“Playing tough,” Posey said. “The more tough team was gonna win this game.”

The win marks back-to-back trips to the district title game for Kendall White’s Auburn Mountainview squad.

“Everyone counted us out ever since last year,” Posey said. “I don’t even know what to say, man. It feels great going back to the district championship two years in a row, knowing I get a chance to get a title.”

Bellarmine, which has been one of the area’s top teams this winter, faces a challenging road in the postseason without its top scorer Kade Price. Price suffered a knee injury in the 3A PSL league championship game earlier this month and is out for the rest of the year.

Bellarmine forward Luke Heisel scored a team-high 19 points in the loss, while Ben Heisel added 11 and Elliott Stevenson scored 10. In addition to Posey’s 22 points, Jarrick Matthews scored 15 and Markel Lowery added 12 for Auburn Mountainview.

Auburn Mountainview will face Lincoln in the district championship game on Saturday.

4A: Emerald Ridge 61, Camas 51; Puyallup 76, Auburn 58

Ellis Mosley led the Jaguars with 20 points, Jamaize McGriff scored 17 and Jordan Bennett added 12 for the Jaguars, who move on to face Puyallup for the fourth time this season. Emerald Ridge won both of the regular season meetings, but Puyallup won the league tournament championship game.

To earn matchup No. 4, Puyallup stunned No. 1 Auburn, winning 76-58 on Thursday night in Auburn. At one point, Puyallup led 43-18 in the second quarter and led by 20 after three quarters. Mason Sonntag and Will Nasinec scored 20 apiece for the Vikings in the win.
