Road trip! State hoops preview for 2A, 1A, 2B, 1B tournaments in Yakima, Spokane
The Tacoma Dome hosts four state basketball tournaments this week — Class 4A boys and girls and Class 3A boys and girls — but the remainder of the South Sound’s high school programs trek across the Cascades for state hoops in Yakima and Spokane.
Class 2A and 1A programs battle for a title inside the Yakima Valley SunDome, and the state’s 2B and 1B schools take to Numerica Veterans Arena in Spokane to crown a champion. The Round of 12 begins Wednesday, trimming the field to eight. Quarterfinals are held Thursday, semifinals are Friday, and state championships commence Saturday, along with placing games.
Here’s a deeper look at brackets, schedules and local contenders in small school state tournaments:

SOUTH SOUND CONTENDERS
No. 5 Tumwater (21-3) — The undefeated 2A Evergreen champs can make noise in Yakima — Tumwater won 20 straight before dropping the District 4 title game to No. 2 R.A. Long — but they’ll need to regroup after a 35-point loss to No. 4 Pullman in the regional round. Few offenses are as balanced, featuring five juniors averaging at least nine points per game. Look for junior forward Landon Anchors (12.8 PPG, 4 RPG) and 6-foot-4 Luke Overbay, who’s close to averaging a double-double (9.3 PPG, 11.1 RPG).

SOUTH SOUND CONTENDERS
No. 9 Fife (20-5) — Junior guard Olivia Borden’s game-high 17 points lifted Fife over Ridgefield in Saturday’s regional round, punching their tickets to Yakima. The Trojans enter the SunDome on a 15-game win streak, possess backcourt depth with guards Devasia Richardson and Remy Berg, and feature 5-foot-10 forward Ariana Vaeao up front. No. 8 Selah and No. 7 Ellensburg stand in Fife’s way to the semifinals. Could we see a deep run?

SOUTH SOUND CONTENDERS
No. 5 Annie Wright (16-9) — Feel old yet? Freshman point guard James Thomas, the son of two-time NBA All-Star and Tacoma native Isaiah Thomas, is Annie Wright’s new standout. The defending 1A-champion Gators graduated their core last spring, but Thomas has taken the reins — dropping 35 points with six assists and no turnovers in a winner-to-state playoff victory over Bellevue Christian on Feb. 17. Can the smooth, all-level scorer (20 PPG, 6 APG) orchestrate a run in Yakima? Watch for sophomore forward Austin Collins (17 PPG, 6 RPG) and 6-foot-5 forward Brian Holliday (10 PPG, 10 RPG), the inside threats for a Gators program that upset No. 4 Bear Creek in the regional round.
No. 10 Cascade Christian (17-8) — The Cougars are headed to Yakima for the first time since 2018, outlasting King’s Way Christian in Friday’s 1A regional round behind senior guard Cole Theiste’s game-high 21 points. Cascade Christian went 2-1 against No. 8 Seattle Christian this season and owns wins over 2A-Clover Park and Fife.

SOUTH SOUND CONTENDERS
No. 4 Annie Wright (18-6) — Bellevue Christian hadn’t lost to a 1A Nisqually rival since 2022 until Annie Wright refused to let that streak live on. The Gators swept their two-game regular-season series with the Vikings and handed them a third loss in last month’s District 3 championship for good measure, a true contender in Yakima despite their regional loss to No. 5 Royal. Look for senior guard Aaliyeh Martin (15.8 PPG, 6.2 RPG), sophomore forward Jasmine Andrisek (10.8 PPG, 7.9 RPG) and sophomore guard Camille Bates (13.9 PPG). Annie Wright beat 3A-Eastside Catholic by 13 points last Dec. 30 and kept it close with 4A-Lake Washington in a 63-55 loss on Dec. 29.
No. 10 Cascade Christian (18-6) — The Cougars run through Abby Shelton, the sophomore post averaging 14 points and seven rebounds per game this winter. Cascade Christian beat No. 10 Hoquiam in Friday’s 1A regionals and split a two-game season series with No. 4 Annie Wright.
