There aren’t many players who can separate from opposing corners like Sumner High’s Braylon Pope. The blazing-fast wideout turned in his best season yet as a junior in 2025, leading the Spartans to back-to-back Class 4A state titles.

The 6-foot-3 wideout totaled 869 yards and 12 touchdowns on 52 receptions, averaging an eye-popping 16.7 yards per reception. He also improved as a physical blocker, which mattered when running back Lance McGee was toting the rock 30+ times a game during Sumner’s postseason run.

Pope has been on the radar of colleges since early in his high school career. His stock has only risen since then and he shut down his recruitment in December, committing to hometown Washington, choosing the Huskies over Oregon, Miami, USC and others.

Pope is considered a four-star recruit and the No. 1 player in Washington in the 2027 class by Rivals. Wondering who else made the Top 10? Here’s the 2027 list from Rivals. The top five players in the class are considered four-star prospects, while the other five are considered three-star recruits.

EXTRA POINTS

  • Washington hasn’t yet cracked the top tier of the Big Ten after Kalen DeBoer’s departure to Alabama, but it’s not for lack of effort on the recruiting trail. Jedd Fisch’s staff is recruiting their tails off, securing commitments from four of the top 10 players in the class, so far. Fisch could end up with a couple more when it’s all said and done; Rivals considers the Huskies the favorite to land Puyallup’s Gecova Doyal.
  • Speaking of Puyallup, the Vikings have two of the top 10 players in the class in Doyal and big target J’Isaiah Mitchell. That bodes well for second-year DJ Mims in the fall, as the only thing that stood between the Vikings and the state title last year was TNT state player of the year Lance McGee, Sumner’s running back, who has since graduated.
  • In May, The News Tribune took a look at five of the fastest rising recruits in Washington in the 2027 and 2028 classes, with input from Rivals/On3 national recruiting analyst Brandon Huffman. One of those players was No. 8 Achilles Reyna from Rainier Beach, a basketball player turned edge rusher. Believe it or not, 2025 was Reyna’s first season playing high school football. What he lacks in polish, Reyna makes up for with measurables: 6-foot-7, 240 pounds and athletic, to boot. Another was No. 2 Rashaun Lavata’i, who has shot up the rankings lately.
