Week 2 play call of the week: Kent-Meridian pulls off flea flicker thanks to Emmanuel Daigbe

KENT-MERIDIAN 41, AUBURN 36

Play: Flea flicker

Set: Spread

Down and distance: Second-and-1 from the Kent-Meridian 44

Time remaining: 9:01 in the first quarter

Score at the time: Auburn, 7-0

What happened: Auburn’s defense got caught being too aggressive. Ben Woods handed the ball to running back Malik Woolery, who tossed it back to Woods with Emmanuel Daigbe running free down the middle of the field. Everything was to Kent-Meridian coach Brett Allen’s design — sucking up Auburn’s aggressive run-stoppers at linebacker and safety — except Woods slightly underthrew Daigbe. But when you have a receiver as strong and aggressive as Daigbe, a state wrestling champion, all you have to do is get him the ball. “He had to go into his version of ‘Beast Mode,’ ” Allen said. Daigbe stiff-armed one Auburn defender to the ground and bounced off another before standing in the end zone for the 66-yard touchdown reception. Not only was it an electric play, but a vital one. The Royals needed every score they could get in their second consecutive Taylor Trophy victory, including Woolery’s 25-yard touchdown run in the final minute.
