Prep volleyball: Kasey Holand, Lauren Smith lead Auburn Riverside past AMV for 26th consecutive win
Make that 26 consecutive matches.
Kasey Holand had 19 kills, four blocks and 11 digs and Lauren Smith added 38 assists as the Auburn Riverside High School volleyball team won the final two sets for a 25-14, 25-27, 25-16, 25-21 victory on Thursday at Auburn Mountainview.
Even without stars Carson Heilborn, Precious Atafua and five other seniors who graduated from last year’s 3A state title team, the Ravens (4-0; 4-0 3A SPSL) still handled the up-and-coming Lions(3-1; 3-1) to win their 26th consecutive match dating back to last season’s undefeated run.
Auburn Mountainview’s second-set victory was the first time a team has taken a set from the Ravens this season.
Calley Heilborn had 13 kills, 12 digs and three blocks for Auburn Riverside and Kiana Drumheller added 14 kills, two blocks and 13 digs.
The two teams meet again Oct. 19 at Auburn Riverside.
Tumwater 3, Emerald Ridge 2: It took all five sets, but the Thunderbirds rallied to win the final two sets and beat the visiting Jaguars, 17-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23, 15-12.
Maddy Pilon spread the ball around effectively for Tujmwater (5-0), recording 50 assists. Kennedy Croft attacked the Jaguar defense with 19 kills and 20 digs.
Tumwater, of the 2A Evergreen Conference, has started the season with wins over five 4A schools, including Curtis, which last year reached the 4A state semifinals, and now Emerald Ridge, which lost in last year’s 4A state title match.
The Jaguars (4-2; 3-1 4A SPSL South) were not without a little firepower of their own as the team was led by Makenna Smith with 25 kills and 24 digs. Jadyn Mullen had 60 assists.
North Thurston 3, Central Kitsap 0: Kailey Losey made sure everyone looked good with 29 assists and Alex Porter added 13 kills and three aces as the Rams’ (5-0; 5-0 3A Narrows) cruised to the 25-13, 25-15, 25-13 win and handed the Cougars (6-1; 4-1 3A Narrows) their first loss of the season.
Wilson 3, Mount Tahoma 0: Alex Bunch had seven kills and eight digs as the Rams (3-3; 2-3 3A Narrows)) gathered their third win of the season, 25-16, 25-17, 25-21.
Capital 3, Foss 0: Hali Ehresmann had nine kills, seven digs and two aces as the Cougars (3-2; 3-2 3A Narrows) won their second consecutive match.
Auburn 3, Bonney Lake 1: Leana Liu had seven kills, 22 digs and two aces in the Trojans’ 25-21, 25-22, 11-25, 25-18 win over the Panthers.
Celine Liulamaga added 32 assists for Auburn (3-2; 2-2 3A SPSL) and Maysen Tinnney had 13 kills.
Carly Gibbon had 10 kills, five blocks and four aces for Bonney Lake (1-4; 1-3).
Sumner 3, Lakes 0: Heather Thompson’s 13 kills and Georgia Hinds’ 27 assists helped lift the Spartans (3-2; 3-1 3A SPSL) to the 25-14, 25-18, 25-10 win over the Lancers.
Christina Doero Borgh had 12 digs for Lakes (1-4; 0-4).
Life Christian 3, Ilwaco 0: The Eagles cruised to the 25-13, 25-21, 25-11 victory behind Alyssa Donaldson’s 10 aces and 10 assists. Courtney Youngblood added six aces and nine kills.
