Prep soccer: Leahi Manthei wins match for Gig Harbor, Curtis’ Morgan Weaver scores 4 goals

Leahi Manthei’s goal did it.

The junior scored in the 89th minute and the Gig Harbor High School girls soccer team took sole possession of first place in the 4A Narrows League with a 2-1 victory at previously unbeaten Bellarmine Prep on Tuesday.

"It was an evenly matched game between us and [Bellarmine]," said co-Head Coach Todd Northstrom. "The two teams spent a lot of time feeling each other out."

The Tides struck first on a Kaysie Bruce goal at the 40th minute to send the team into halftime with the lead and momentum.

The Lions, however, would answer back at the 61st minute when Emily Walsh had a free-ball breakaway to score the equalizer.

As the game clock was ticking towards the end of the match, Manthei had a breakaway that led to a one on one against the Bellarmine keeper.

One kick, one goal in the 89th minute, a Tides 2-1 victory.

Gig Harbor (6-2-1; 5-0-0 4A Narrows) has won six consecutive matches since starting the season with a pair of losses and a tie. Bellarmine Prep (4-1-1; 4-1-0) had won four consecutive matches after tying Puyallup in the season opener.

"The next time we play each other, it will be the second to last match of the season and at Gig Harbor," Northstrom said. "Hopefully, we will be playing for a league title. I look forward to it."

Curtis 5, Puyallup 2: Morgan Weaver took it to another level.

It’s probably no coincidence it came in a match with first place in the 4A SPSL South on the line.

Weaver had an incredible match, tying a season-high four goals to lead Curtis (7-1-0; 5-0-0 4A SPSL South) to the victory and hand Puyallup (4-2-2; 3-1-0) its first league loss of the season.

Weaver, a Washington State commit, has scored 22 goals in eight matches this season (2.75 per match), including 11 goals her past three matches. She had a hat trick against Rogers last Thursday and four goals against Bethel before that.

Weaver was at it again Tuesday, scoring a goal in the fourth minute followed by goals in the 26th, 56th, and 78th minutes.

Puyallup’s Jordan Bartelson put her team on the scoreboard with a goal in the 60th minute and Saige Lyons followed with another in the 79th.

Auburn Riverside 2, Bonney Lake 1: Izzy Creighton scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to lift the Ravens to the come-from-behind victory.

Bonney Lake’s Kelsey Lund scored the match’s first goal in the 32nd minute, but Auburn Riverside’s Victoria Kendall tied it just before halftime in the 39th.

The win keeps Auburn Riverside (5-2-0; 4-1-0 3A SPSL) in sole possession of second place behind Sumner in the 3A SPSL.

Auburn Mountainview 3, Lakes 2: Lily Lavine’s hat trick was just enough to lift the Lions over the Lancers.

Lavine scored in the first minute, followed by her second goal five minutes later. She got another in the 62nd after Lakes’ Jaida Jones scored in the 18th.

Lakes’ Zoie Simanski cut the lead to one with her goal in the 68th minute, but Auburn Mountainview was able to hold on for the win.

Life Christian 7, Onalaska 1: Tyler Taff, Amy Bogue and Alea Yun scored two goals each as the Eagles cruised to the victory.

Mount Rainier Lutheran 9, Seattle Lutheran 1: Taylor Hoffman scored four goals and the Hawks got scoring from five other players in the win over Seattle Lutheran.
