Week 5: 5 things to watch in high school football

Ruling overturned

Auburn Mountainview quarterback Gresch Jensen (a Montana commit) was ejected from last week’s loss to Sumner, but game officials stated in a report to the Washington Officials Association on Thursday that the call was a mistake, AMV athletic director Chris Carr said. That means he can play in this week’s game against Auburn Riverside, though safety Gavin Robertson won’t (his ejection was upheld).

Injured Abe

Willie Hamilton played in one varsity game for Lincoln last year. That was in the Abes’ 91-0 win over Mount Tahoma. He’ll start this week’s rematch of that controversial game against the Thunderbirds with Joey Sinclair (56-85, 965 yards, 14 TDs) out the next six weeks with a fractured collarbone.

Just like old times

It has been four years since Bonney Lake coach Jason Silbaugh was the defensive coordinator under Dave Miller at Lakes, and the Lancers appear to have found an admirable replacement in former UW and NFL linebacker Hillary Butler. Silbaugh says this will be the toughest Lakes team he’s had to face.

Lost their ‘way’

Federal Way, Decatur … both 0-4? Few could have foreseen both Federal Way schools entering Week 5 without a win, especially with the Eagles coming off a trip to the 4A state quarterfinals. But with injuries to QBs D’Jimon Jones and Gabe Togia, the Golden Gators smell blood in the water.

Runnin’ man

Olympia went to Issaquah this time last year without Scott Gunther and David Woodward because of injuries. It was shut out, 21-0. Now? Gunther is back from a broken finger and collarbone and has rushed for at least 200 yards in three of four games (809 yards total), and Woodward is just as dangerous at receiver.
