Play call of the week: Jaiave Magalei, Andrew Bostic jump-start Lakes against O’Dea with big gain

LAKES 56, O’DEA 36

Play: Fly right fade pass.

Set: Deuce right strong.

Down and distance: First-and-5 at the Lakes 41.

Time remaining: Middle of the second quarter.

Score at the time: O’Dea, 21-14.

What happened: The Lancers took off in the second half of this game, outscoring O’Dea 29-8 to advance past the district playoffs and into state for the 23rd time in school history. But Lakes first had to keep pace in a back-and-forth first half. O’Dea scored its third touchdown of the first half and Lakes coach Dave Miller wanted to get his offense off to a big start on its ensuing drive. Quarterback Jaiave Magalei, who finished the game 22 of 27 for 276 yards and six total touchdowns, faked a fly-sweep handoff and had a couple options. Tight end Cale Lindsay took the safety’s attention on a post across the middle, and the outside receiver took the cornerback on a fade route. That left Andrew Bostic, who faked as the lead blocking back for Rico McLean on the sweep, open on a streak down the middle of the field and Magalei hit him for a 23-yard gain. “The safety has to stay home and take the tight end and the corner goes with the Z receiver so that let our running back sneak up the seam,” Miller said. “Nobody noticed him coming out of the backfield.” Lakes tied the game a few plays later on an 11-yard touchdown pass to Lindsay.
