Play call of the week: Montesano’s miracle play beats Cascade Christian in state playoffs
MONTESANO 25, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 22
Play: 80 Idaho cross
Set: Trips bunch right open gun
Down and distance: First-and-10, ball on the 50
Time remaining: Two seconds in fourth quarter
Score at the time: Cascade Christian, 22-19
What happened: Devastation for Cascade Christian. A miracle for Montesano. Quarterback Jake Herzog bought some time, scrambled out of the pocket and threw on the run — just before being hit — to top playmaker Kylar Prante. Prante caught it at the 10, slipped along the sideline and into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. Coach Terry Jensen said it was a variation of the play Montesano used to score a 42-yard TD just before halftime in its 2012 state title victory over Royal. “We like to name stuff from whom we steal it from,” Jensen said. “… It’s a play we work on every week on the day before a game — the play has been in the playbook for over 10 years. It is the first time we have ever ran it in a game and it was the first time we ever won a game on the last play of the game (not counting overtimes).”
