Enumclaw upsets Peninsula, 69-67, in OT thriller at bidistrict tournament
Senior forward Scott Garvin made huge plays at the end of regulation and overtime, helping Enumclaw upend No. 7 Peninsula, 69-67, in the 3A West Central/Southwest bidistrict tournament semifinal on Wednesday night at Rogers High School.
With Enumclaw trailing by two points with 3.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Garvin stole JaQuori McLaughlin’s inbounds pass and was fouled while shooting. He made both free throws to send the game into overtime.
Garvin struck again in overtime when the score was tied 63-63 with 40 seconds left. He received a pass on the left block, went up against two defenders and scored the go-ahead basket while drawing a foul.
Those were the only four points Garvin scored, but they were the biggest of the game.
“He has that scrappy, never-say-die attitude,” said Enumclaw coach Kellen Hall. “Since he came back, he’s added a layer of toughness.”
Senior forward Josh Erikson led Enumclaw with 20 points, while sophomore Kaden Anderson added 15.
Enumclaw (13-10) advances to the district championship game against No. 4 Auburn-Mountainview at noon Saturday at Puyallup High School.
The Hornets’ win was a surprise after they lost to Peninsula twice during South Puget Sound League play.
“You know the old saying, it’s tough to beat a team three times,” said Hall. “We keep running into league opponents.”
They’ll get a chance to test that saying again — the Hornets lost twice to Auburn-Mountainview during the regular season.
Enumclaw hasn’t won a 3A district title since 1990.
Getting players such as Garvin back in midseason has helped Enumclaw.
“We had injuries and suspensions early in the season,” said Hall. “We weren’t at full strength until halfway through the year.”
Peninsula (21-3) will play No. 10 Wilson in the third-place game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Rogers. Both Peninsula and Wilson have qualified for the regional round of the 3A state tournament.
McLaughlin led Peninsula with 37 points. He scored 17 of the Seahawks’ first 20 points.
Auburn-Mountainview 61, Wilson 48: In a matchup between two of Western Washington’s top scorers, Wilson’s David Jenkins and Auburn-Mountainview’s Ryan Lacey each scored 26 points.
But Lacey had the more experienced supporting cast, and his Lions pulled away late to advance to the district championship game.
Auburn-Mountainview (22-1) used an array of set inbounds plays designed by SPSL 3A coach of the year Thomas Ostrander, getting numerous easy baskets from Lacey and 6-foot-10 senior Tristan Miguel.
Defensively, the Lions had senor guard Ki’Jan Weisinger shadowed Jenkins everywhere on the floor — including when he was 35 feet from the basket without the ball. Jenkins was unable to get going until the second half, when he scored 17 of his 26 points.
Wilson (18-5) fell behind when Auburn-Mountainview hit back-to-back 3-pointers at the end of the first quarter. The Rams never caught up, and their bid to repeat as district champions was foiled.
