Sumner boys basketball coach Brett McDaniel resigns
Brett McDaniel is stepping down after nine seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Sumner High School.
He cited time for his family and the demands of the position as a couple of factors, he said in a statement.
McDaniel led Sumner to the 3A West Central/Southwest bidistrict tournament, where the Spartans lost 58-57 in a consolation game to Auburn Riverside and fell two wins short of reaching the regional round of the 3A state tournament.
“It is just time to put my attention to my 3 kids and the needs of my family while pursuing other passions which I have not been able to find time for,” McDaniel said. “The demands as a head basketball coach continue to grow and has become a full-time job. No (cost-of-living adjustment) in coaching contracts.”
He coached Sumner as a 2A school, and the past two years as a 3A school. It will move up a classification to the 4A South Puget Sound League next school year.
McDaniel led Sumner to the state regional in four seasons, including a district title, the schools first, in the 2011-12 season. He was 124-93 in nine seasons at Sumner.
He said he will continue to teach at the school as a Servant Leadership and Physical Education teacher, while also pursuing his interest as a Mental Conditioning Coach through the Ambassadors for Better Culture and project “Rewire!”
“The program is in a great spot for the future coach,” McDaniel said. “I am thankful to have had amazing support from our administration and community throughout my time here.”
