Bellevue girls knock off undefeated Lynnwood

Undefeated no more.

Bellevue was able to retain their unbeaten record as they made the halftime adjustments and got the best of Lynnwood (25-1), 73-60, in the state semifinals at the Tacoma Dome.

The Wolverines (25-0) battled injuries and foul trouble the majority of the game, especially during the first half. The Wolverines had 11 personal fouls and were in the bonus early in the second quarter.

But that didn’t hold them back from being aggressive. The Wolverines were keen to diving on the floor for loose balls and searching for contact during their shots. They went 17-for-29 from the free throw line, which set them apart from the Royals in the third quarter.

Anna Wilson was the leading scorer for the Wolverines with 16 points, before she fouled out of the game with 2 minutes, 12 seconds left to play in the fourth. She handed the keys over to Shelby Cansler, who scored 14, and Tatiana Streun, who turned her ankle while driving to the hoop in the second quarter.

“My ankles pretty fat,” said Streun, who scored 12 points.

“We knew they were going to be really physical. We knew they were going to want it just as bad as we did. They’re great, Mikayla and Jordyn are great players,” said Streun.

Mikayla Pivec was held to six points during the first half, but emerged as the game’s leading scorer in the second half. Pivec found and created some open lanes for herself, and drove to the basket with one purpose, to score. She finished with 20 points, Jordyn Edwards finished with 12.

After the game the Wolverines sprinted to the locker room, screaming and yelling. This will be the first time Bellevue is back to the championship round since 2003, when they lost to Meadowdale. The last time they won the state championship was in 2002, against Kennedy.
