Bellarmine’s Flynn, Peninsula’s McLaughlin highlight WIBCA all-state rosters
Let’s play more basketball.
Twelve players from the South Sound were selected to play in an all-state high school boys basketball game, including Bellarmine Prep’s Malachi Flynn, The News Tribune’s All-Area player of the year.
He’s among the 10 players on the 4A squad that will play some of the state’s top seniors from the 3A classification in what amounts to an all-star game at 6 p.m. Saturday at Mountlake Terrace High School.
Rosters were selected by members of the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (WIBCA). Only seniors were eligible.
Here’s the schedule for Saturday’s games at Mountlake Terrace:
▪ 2 p.m.: 1B vs. 2B
▪ 4 p.m.: 1A vs. 2A
▪ 6 p.m.: 3A vs. 4A
WIBCA officially released its all-state senior players of the year, with Peninsula’s JaQuori McLaughlin, an Oregon State signee, earning Mr. Basketball — though Peninsula coach Jake Jackson had confirmed the selection on Feb. 22.
Flynn earned 4A player of the year.
They’ll play each other in Saturday’s 4A vs. 3A game, with Flynn teaming up with fellow TNT All-Area selections Jalen McDaniels (a San Diego State signee) of two-time 4A state champion Federal Way and Curtis’ Aushanti Potts-Woods.
They’ll also play with Kent-Meridian’s Romaine Jackson, a 5-foot-8 point guard who averaged 22.4 points per game during the regular season, and South Kitsap’s Eric Wattree, an Eastern Washington University commit who averaged 23.2 ppg, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
The 3A team features first-team All-Area picks McLaughlin, Wilson’s David Jenkins Jr., Auburn Mountainview’s Ryan Lacey and Lincoln’s Trevion Brown.
Auburn Mountainview’s Tristan Miguel, a 6-foot-10 Western Oregon signee also made the team. As did Lakeside of Seattle’s Isiah Brown, The News Tribune’s All-State player of the year and Northwestern commit who this year broke the Metro League’s career scoring record.
River Ridge will have two players on the 2A team: Kobe Key and LaBrandon Price.
Evergreen Lutheran’s Jeffrey Parker made the 1B team.
