Track and field: Curtis’ Alexis Ellis sets state sophomore record in triple jump
Curtis sophomore Alexis Ellis set the state sophomore record in the triple jump with a leap of 41 feet, 4¾ inches at the Pasco Invitational on Saturday.
That’s the third-best mark of any athlete in the nation, according to athletic.net, and passed the sophomore record of 41-3¾ set in 2014 by Mountlake Terrace’s Chinne Okoronkwo. Only LaShonda Christopher for Timberline in 1994 also surpassed 40 feet in the triple jump as a sophomore.
But all that, and Ellis didn’t even finish in first place Saturday. She lost to Okoronkwo, who hit 41-9 1/4 for the second-best mark in the nation. Ellis and Okorokwo only trail Tara Davis of Agoura, California, and her mark of 43-2.
The Washington state record is 42-10¼ set by Curtis graduate Andrea Guebelle. Ellis also own the freshman record, when she hit 42-4¾ at the Lake Washington Invitational last year.
Also, the Tahoma girls 4x100 relay team of Tierra “Umi” Wilson, Alisha “Miya” Wilson, Olivia Ribera, Aliya “Nami” Wilson won the Pasco Invitational in 47.13 seconds. That’s the third-best time in state history behind Federal Way’s 2014 relay team that ran in 46.90 seconds and Garfield’s 1983 team that ran in 47.05 seconds.
