Gig Harbor, Kentwood, Puyallup and Thomas Jefferson will be some of the local high schools represented on the Kansas City Royals’ team at this year’s Area Code Baseball Games in Long Beach, California.

Gig Harbor pitcher Patrick Fredrickson, Kentwood catcher Shane McGuire, Puyallup pitcher Michael Newstrom and shortstop Michael Spellacy and Thomas Jefferson shortstop Mason DeLaCruz were selected to the Royals squad, which is comprised of players from the Northwest region.

They’ll play for five days from Aug. 6-10 among the best high school baseball players in the country, and be dissected by collegiate and professional baseball scouts.

Eight teams make up the Area Code games and are named after professional teams — Royals, Oakland Athletics (Northern California), Texas Rangers (Texas and Louisiana), Cincinnati Reds (Four Corners and Hawaii), Chicago White Sox (Midwest region), Milwaukee Brewers (Southern California), New York Yankees (Northeast region) and the Washington Nationals (Southeast region and Virginia).

McGuire’s older brother, Reese, played for the Royals in the 2012 Area Code games. The 4A SPSL Northeast MVP is one of 15 players from Washington on the team.

Puyallup’s Newstrom is a left-hander committed to Washington State University and Spellacy is committed to Gonzaga. Fredrickson is a right-handed pitcher who was an honorable mention all-4A Narrows selection for Gig Harbor this past season.

Thomas Jefferson’s Mason DeLaCruz is also a WSU committ.

Other players from the state of Washington include Skyview’s Brodie Barnum, Interlake’s Stevie Emanuels, Seattle Prep’s Stevie Franklin and Jacob Terao, Southridge’s Mason Martin, Lynnwood’s Kyler McMahan, Shorewood’s Arthur Pate, Battle Ground’s Isaiah Smith and Central Valley’s Jeremy Yelland.
