Mariners claim switch-hitting utility player Sam Haggerty off waivers from Mets
The Seattle Mariners added more versatility to their young roster Friday, claiming switch-hitting utility player Sam Haggerty off waivers from the New York Mets.
The 25-year-old was designated for assignment on Dec. 24 and placed on unconditional release waivers Wednesday. He played just 11 games with the Mets after making his MLB debut the first week of September.
Haggerty did not record a hit in four plate appearances, but did score a pair of runs for New York, and appeared at both second base and in right field.
Spanning three levels of the minors last season — he mostly played in Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse — Haggerty appeared at six different defensive positions, including second base (31 appearances), center field (25), left field (10), third base (six), shortstop (five) and right field (one).
He slashed at .259/.370/.356 with Binghamton, stole 19 bases and was named a midseason All-Star. He was promoted to Syracuse midway through August, and hit .310/.383/.524 in 12 games there before he was called up by the Mets.
Haggerty was originally drafted by the Indians in the 24th round in 2015 out of New Mexico. He spent four seasons in Cleveland’s minor league system before he was traded to the Mets as part of a deal for catcher Kevin Plawecki last January.
With Haggerty’s addition, Seattle’s 40-man roster is now full.
