Get ready to reminisce – ROOT, MLBTV, 710 ESPN Seattle to air classic Mariners games

With the baseball season is pushed back until at least May, the Seattle Mariners, ROOT Sports, MLBTV and 710 ESPN Seattle are gearing up to bring fans a blast from the past.

Beginning Thursday — which was this season’s originally scheduled Opening Day — and running through April 2, ROOT will air a classic Mariners home opener beginning at 7 p.m.

The series will begin with Opening Day from the 2001 season, which featured the debut of Ichiro Suzuki, a 3-for-3 performance by Hall of Fame designated hitter Edgar Martinez, and resulted in a 5-4 Mariners win over the A’s.

The game will air at 1 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. with play-by-play from Dave Niehaus, Rick Rizzs and Ron Fairly.

Other Mariners home openers scheduled for the week include:

Friday, March 27: Los Angeles Angels at Mariners from 2003

Saturday, March 28: Oakland A’s at Mariners from 2007

Sunday, March 29: Los Angeles Angels at Mariners from 2009

Monday, March 30: Los Angeles Angels at Mariners from 2014

Tuesday, March 31: Los Angeles Angels at Mariners from 2015

Wednesday, April 1: Houston Astros at Mariners from 2017

Thursday, April 2: Cleveland Indians at Mariners from 2018

Each of these games will air at 7 p.m. on ROOT.

In addition to these games, other classic games so beloved by fans will be made available before the 2020 season begins, though they are not yet scheduled. These include:

Randy Johnson’s no-hitter from 1990

Games 3, 4 and 5 of the 1995 ALDS

The 2000 ALDS

The 2000 ALCS

Games 2, 4 and 5 of the 2001 ALDS

MLB All-Star Games from 1979 and 2001 — both of which were hosted in Seattle

ROOT will also play encore episodes of Mariners Mondays, Sunday Night Classics, Mariners All Access, Mariners Spotlight and other programming from 2013 on during the delay.

MLBTV also announced Monday it is airing all games from the 2018 and 2019 seasons for free, and has more than 100 full classic games — including Felix Hernandez’s perfect game in 2012 — on YouTube, with more to be added in the coming weeks.

710 ESPN Seattle, the Mariners’ flagship radio station, will also begin airing classic Mariners games Thursday, beginning with the same 2001 Opening Day game shown on ROOT. It will air at 7 p.m.
