Mariners upcoming games against A’s postponed after Oakland reports positive COVID-19 test
The start of the Mariners’ upcoming homestand will be delayed following a positive COVID-19 test in the A’s organization.
Oakland was scheduled to arrive Tuesday for a three-game series in Seattle, but Major League Baseball announced Monday morning the first two games of the series at T-Mobile Park have been postponed.
“Out of an abundance of caution and to allow for additional testing and contact tracing to be performed within the Oakland Athletics’ organization, the scheduled games between the A’s and the host Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday, September 1st and Wednesday, September 2nd have been postponed,” MLB wrote in a statement. “Major League Baseball will continue to provide updates as necessary.”
The A’s also released a statement following the positive test result Sunday. The club has not specified whether the positive test result was from a player, coach or other traveling team personnel. The A’s game Sunday against the Astros in Houston also was called off following the positive result.
“On Sunday, the Oakland A’s announced that a member of their organization tested positive for COVID-19,” the club wrote Monday. “The team conducted testing and contact tracing for the entire traveling party in line with MLB protocols, and they will continue to self-isolate in Houston with recommended safety precautions in place.”
This is the first set of Mariners games impacted by positive tests in this abbreviated season. Manager Scott Servais said on a video call following Monday’s win in Anaheim the Mariners would take a full day off Tuesday, hold a late afternoon workout Wednesday and see what Thursday brings.
The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser reported Tuesday morning the A’s have been cleared to resume playing Thursday. Rounds of testing Sunday and Monday revealed no additional positives.
The Mariners and A’s were initially scheduled to play through Thursday, meaning one of the games could be made up with a doubleheader that day should the A’s still travel to Seattle.
Should that scenario play out, the second missed game would likely have to be made up at the end of September when the Mariners visit Oakland for a three-game series from Sept. 25-27 to wrap up the regular season.
