Seahawks go wide receiver in 6th round, possible kick/punt returner Freddie Swain, Florida

The Seahawks would rather Tyler Lockett not return so many punts and kickoffs.

But their top wide receivers has continued to do most of those duties, too, in recent seasons. His team just trusts its 2015 Pro Bowl returner more than anyone else with those jobs.

The Seahawks hope they can trust Freddie Swain to help reduce Lockett’s return load.

That appears to be the idea behind Seattle selecting the Florida wide receiver, punt and kickoff returner with its final scheduled pick in the 2020 NFL draft. The Seahawks chose Swain with final selection of round six Saturday, pick 214 overall.

Swain played through a torn labrum in his shoulder during the 2016 season then had surgery. When he returned in 2017, the Gators used him some as a slot receiver inside. He led Florida with seven touchdown catches last season. He returned 14 punts and two kickoffs in his final college season.

Swain is likely to be in competition with returning veteran David Moore and 2019 seventh-round pick John Ursua for one of Seattle’s final roster spots for wide receiver.
