Hardware hog: Seahawks’ Russell Wilson NFC player of the week for 2nd time in 3 weeks
The record-breaking Russell Wilson is already award-winning for his blazing season, too.
The NFL on Wednesday named the Seahawks’ quarterback as the NFC offensive player of the week. That’s for his second consecutive five-touchdown-pass performance, last weekend in Seattle’s 38-31 home victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
It’s the second time in three weeks Wilson has won the award, and 11th time in his nine-year career.
He could have won it all three weeks of this NFL season so far. He didn’t get it for his first five-TD day this month, in week 2 during the Seahawks’ last-play win over New England.
This is the fourth time in two seasons he’s won the player-of-the-week honor. It’s the quickest he’s won it twice. Last season he was so honored for week 2 and week 9.
Wilson completed 27 of 40 throws against the Cowboys, for 315 yards and another sterling passer rating of 130.7. His rating of 139.0 for the season is more than 14 points higher than the next highly rated passer, Josh Allen for also-undefeated Buffalo.
Wilson is completing 76.7% of his throws through three games. His completion rate of 88.6% in Seattle’s opener at Atlanta (31 of 35) was his career best.
Last weekend he broke Patrick Mahomes’ league record for most touchdown passes through the first three games of a season. Wilson has 14 touchdowns, with just one interception. And that wasn’t on him; a short pass went through tight end Greg Olsen’s hands into a Patriot’s two games ago.
Last week, Wilson said he cares more about the NFL most valuable player award—because it signifies what he cares about most.
Winning.
He’s never received an MVP vote, let alone the award. That’s despite his seven Pro Bowls, a Super Bowl title and being the winningest quarterback for the first seven seasons in league history.
“I don’t want a vote. More importantly, I want to win,” Wilson said before shredding Dallas, like he did New England and Atlanta in previous games.
“Obviously, MVP is a special award. The best players in the world, so many great guys. I think of guys like Lamar last year, he was unbelievable last year. Such a great player. Guys like Patrick Mahomes, some other greats, obviously, that still play this game. Tom. Drew (Brees).
“For me, I want to be regarded as one of the best to ever play this game, to be honest with you. It’s part of the process. Hopefully, I can win enough games and do enough special things as a team to be able to do that.
“It’s a team award, really, I think, in terms of the MVP. It’s really a special award, because everybody’s involved in it. Hopefully I can be a part of it. Hopefully we can be a part of that, as a team.”
