Seahawks finally(!) address center, agree to deal with ex-Rams starter Austin Blythe
Finally, in what for many fans may feel like is a meteor striking Seattle, the Seahawks have addressed their issue at center.
The team has reached an agreement on a free-agent contract with former Kansas City Chiefs center Austin Blythe, two NFL sources told The News Tribune Wednesday.
The signing was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Blythe, 29, was the starting center for the Rams in 2020, and starting right guard for Los Angeles in 2018 and ‘19. He signed a one-year contract worth $990,000 with Kansas City before last season. Rookie Creed Humphrey won the Chiefs center job over Blythe for 2021.
New Seahawks offensive line coach Andy Dickerson was on the Rams’ staff when Blythe started for them.
So was Shane Waldron. He will be entering his second season as the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator after arriving from the Rams’ offensive staff that coached Blythe.
The Seahawks had only 2021 waiver claim Dakoda Shepley on their roster as a center before Wednesday’s agreement with Blythe.
Ethan Pocic started the final 10 games of Seattle’s 2021 season at center. Kyle Fuller started the first seven games. The team let both Pocic’s and Fuller’s contracts expire with the end of last season. They are free agents.
