Seahawks quickly re-sign Pro Bowler Jason Myers. It’s 2nd-richest deal for an NFL kicker
What’s Jason Myers being so dependable on kicks worth to the Seahawks?
More than $21 million. And not waiting more than three days into the offseason to get him re-signed.
That price is what Seattle agreed to pay its Pro Bowl kicker in the new four-year contract the team announced on Wednesday. The Associated Press reported the deal to keep Myers, their kicker since 2019, could be worth $22.6 million if he reaches incentives for made field goals and more Pro Bowl selections.
At an average of $5,275,000 per season, Myers’ deal is the second-richest among NFL kickers. Baltimore’s Justin Tucker makes $6 million per year.
Myers made 34 of 37 field goals this past regular season. His kick in overtime to beat the Los Angeles Rams plus Detroit’s upset win at Green Bay later Jan. 8 sent Seattle into the postseason last weekend, for the 10th time in coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider’s 13 years leading the franchise.
Myers signed his contract on the third day of the Seahawks’ offseason. The team lost 41-23 at San Francisco in the NFC wild-card playoffs on Saturday.
Myers led the NFL in scoring this regular season with 143 points. He is the first of up to 26 potential free agents to re-sign with Seattle.
“It’s just the first step in our offseason,” Schneider said to the Seahawks’ team website. “We identified Jason, especially having the year he had, as somebody we wanted to get done as quickly as we possibly could. He’s a huge piece of our championship culture, and he was eager, as were we, to consummate a deal…
“It’s a first step for us for 2023.”
Myers, who turns 32 in May, has made 87.5% of his field-goal attempts in four seasons with the Seahawks. That includes 24 for 24 in 2020. During the 2021 season Myers set a Seattle team record when he made his 31st consecutive field goal, spanning two seasons.
Seattle signed him to a four-year, $15.45 million deal before the 2019 season. He also kicked for the New York Jets (in 2018) and Jacksonville (2015-17).
The husband and father of two young children signed his extension Wednesday with his wife and kids next to him in Seahawks headquarters, according to seahawks.com.
“We wanted to stay here the whole time,” Myers told the team’s website, holding his 3-month-old daughter Hailey. “We had no plans of leaving and we love this organization, the coaching staff, players, everything. I’m so excited to be able to stay for four more years at least, hopefully more.
“The group we had, this team is so much fun. Week-to-week, it’s really fun to be in that locker room.”
