Riq Woolen full go, but lengthy list of Seahawks who miss practice 4 days before Giants
The prevailing thought about the many Seahawks trying to come back from injuries to play at New York?
“We’ll see.”
Coach Pete Carroll said that about starting left tackle Charles Cross (toe), starting right guard Phil Haynes (calf), edge rusher Darrell Taylor (shin) and starting defensive end Dre’mont Jones (hip).
None of them practiced Thursday, four days before Seattle (2-1) takes its two-game winning streak to the New Jersey Meadowlands to play the New York Giants (1-2).
Also missing practice Thursday: wide receiver DK Metcalf (ribs), cornerback Tre Brown (concussion), nickel defensive back Coby Bryant (toe), safety Quandre Diggs (hamstring), nose tackle Jarran Reed (quadriceps) and edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu (Achilles).
Metcalf, Diggs and Reed missed practice last week then played in Seattle’s win over Carolina.
One injured starter Carroll went beyond “we’ll see” with was Pro Bowl cornerback Riq Woolen. He missed the Seahawks’ win over Carolina last weekend with a chest injury he got in Seattle’s victory at Detroit Sept. 17. That’s why Brown was starting when he got concussed last weekend against the Panthers.
Woolen joined returning safety Jamal Adams in practicing fully Thursday.
“He looked pretty good. He went through everything,” Carroll said after Woolen was in the morning walkthrough and before he practiced in the afternoon. “He’s going to practice this week.”
That makes it likely Woolen and Devon Witherspoon, the fifth pick in this year’s draft, will start as cornerbacks for the first time Monday night. Witherspoon has made his first NFL starts the last two weeks. He missed most of August into September with a hamstring injury.
The Seahawks are looking forward to Woolen, Witherspoon and Adams playing together for the first time. Adams hasn’t played in 12 1/2 months, since he tore his quadriceps tendon in the team’s 2022 opener.
“I am excited to see that. I’m excited to see if we can make it through the week and both guys get to play,” Carroll said of Woolen and Witherspoon, “and Jamal getting out there, too. We’ve had this image of what it could be and how we could play. ...
“I’m so happy for Jamal. He gets back to football and playing again.”
Tight end Will Dissly returned to practice for the first time since he injured his shoulder Sept. 17 at Detroit.
“He’s doing pretty well,” Carroll said. “He’s encouraged. He’s hoping he can play (against the Giants).”
Dissly was limited in practice Thursday. So were safety Julian Love and defensive back Artie Burns. Burns was the nickel for Bryant last weekend.
Love is playing the Giants, for whom he was captain until this spring. That’s when he signed a free-agent contract with Seattle.
