Seahawks pregame news in LA for Rams test: Jamal Adams out, Jason Peters is in

Jamal Adams’ doctors told him he’d have this knee pain.

He wasn’t counting on it keeping him out of games.

Yet the Seahawks left the three-time Pro Bowl safety inactive for their game Sunday at the Los Angeles. It’s the first game he missed since he returned Oct. 2 at the New York Giants from 13 months out following a torn quadriceps tendon. That injury and surgery have caused residual knee pain Adams was told would happen.

Seattle’s $70 million safety has been on a pacing schedule for practices between games with knee soreness. He’d been questionable to play Sunday.

“Just trying to take care of him, figure it out as we go,” coach Pete Carroll said Friday.

Adams said he thinks it could be into the summer and fall of 2024 before he’s pain-free.

“I was kind of already told when I did tear my knee that it was going to be a year process as far as getting back out there, getting everything back as far as my explosion, cutting and whatnot,” he said, “not having the pain and dealing with the achiness on top of my knee cap.

“I was told that early on. The competitor in me, I was looking at the doctor saying, ‘Nah, I’m going to be all right.’ But he was damn sure.

“He was right. I’m dealing with it.”

Adams said this past week he was particularly happy Geno Smith, DK Metcalf and the offense drove into position for Jason Myers to win Seattle’s game last weekend against Washington with his field goal on the final play of regulation. Adams preferred to not play overtime. He played all 61 defensive snaps against the Commanders.

“My knee was barkin’,” he said after that game.

“I mean, when I’m on that field I’m going to figure it out. I’m going to try.”

Jason Peters starts

Jason Peters was the starting right tackle in pregame Sunday to start against the Rams. It was the first start for Peters with Seattle. The 41-year-old former All-Pro with the Eagles signed with Seattle’s practice squad Sept. 13. It took him until four weeks ago to get into playing shape.

The previous three games, Stone Forsythe started at right tackle and Peters alternated in.

Peters excelled against Washington in Seattle’s previous game. Seattle’s coaches kept him in, for two-thirds of the offensive snaps, far more than they had planned.

Peters became the 10th starter on the Seahawks’ offensive line in 10 games. Sunday’s was the eight different combination of five starters on the O-line, because of injuries.

Abe Lucas began the season as the starting right tackle, and was that last season as a rookie. He was on injured reserve for more than two months before returning to practice last week. He was not yet ready to play Sunday.

Seahawks’ other inactive players

Rookie running back Kenny McIntosh is physically ready to play off injured reserve, Carroll said this week.

But the Seahawks have no place to play the seventh-round draft choice from Georgia. At least not yet. Rookie second-round pick Zach Charbonnet backed up lead back Kenneth Walker again Sunday. Charbonnet in recent games has become the third-down back. The third running back active against the Rams, DeeJay Dallas, was again the primary kickoff and punt returner.

Seattle’s other inactive players Sunday: defensive lineman Myles Adams, wide receiver Dareke Young (abdomen) and offensive tackles McClendon Curtis and Raiqwon O’Neal.
