Seahawks end Jamal Adams’ regular season, put him on injured reserve among multiple moves

Jamal Adams’ regular season with the Seahawks is indeed over.

Needing roster spots for its key game Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle put Adams plus wide receiver Dee Eskridge on injured reserve Saturday. The team also released veteran pass rusher Frank Clark.

The Seahawks signed three players off their practice squad to fill the those vacated roster spot: linebacker Patrick O’Connell, safety Ty Okada and tackle Jake Curhan.

Adams was going to miss his third consecutive game. The three-time Pro Bowl safety practiced on a limited basis Wednesday and Thursday, then missed practice Friday.

On Friday, the team declared him out for the Steelers game. Seattle needs to win the next-to-last game of the regular season to stay in prime position for a wild-card spot into the NFC playoffs.

Adams’ knee has been paining him since he made his season debut Oct. 2 following 13 months out after a torn quadriceps tendon.

He last played Dec. 10 at San Francisco. In that game Deebo Samuel ran past him easily for the 49ers’ go-ahead touchdown in their win over Seattle.

After that game Seahawks coach Pete Carroll uncharacteristically called out Adams and cornerback Riq Woolen for not playing as they’d been coached on San Francisco’s favorite plays — such as Samuel’s deep-pass touchdown.

In the last two games Adams has missed, Julian Love has thrived as the safety with Quandre Diggs in the back of Seattle’s defense. Love was the NFC defensive player of the week for having two interceptions of Jalen Hurts in the fourth quarter of the Seahawks’ win over Philadelphia Dec. 18.

That was the first recent game Adams missed. Adams was not in the stadium for the game. He left the team that day after Carroll told him he wasn’t playing that Monday night.

“He’s doing everything he can. You know, he’s doing everything he can. It’s just really, really frustrating that he can’t quite get over the hump,” Carroll said Friday.

“The coach said he talked to Adams Friday about not playing.

“He feels this is the right thing for this week,” Carroll said.

Also Saturday, the Seahawks elevated nose tackle Austin Faoliu and cornerback Kelvin Joseph from the practice squad to be available for the game Sunday.
