All questionable Seahawks playing vs. 49ers. Artie Burns promoted with Riq Woolen out
Derick Hall worked with an assistant coach on lateral moves. He jogged the perimeter of his team’s end of the field.
He convinced his coaches he was playing on the Seahawks’ injured defense Thursday night, as it faced its biggest test yet this season.
Hall had been questionable to play because of a foot injury but the team’s sack leader was active to start first-place Seattle’s NFC West game against the kings of the division recently, the San Francisco 49ers, at Lumen Field.
Julian Love also had been questionable to play on the Seahawks’ short turnaround from losing at home to the New York Giants four days earlier. Yet the Pro Bowl safety was also starting Thursday night, despite a sore thigh.
The third Seahawk defender questionable for the game also played. Boye Mafe started at outside linebacker opposite Hall.
He had missed the previous two games with a knee injury.
Hall was starting because Seattle put starting linebacker Uchenna Nwosu on injured reserve. He injured his thigh against the Giants last week. Coach Mike Macdonald said Wednesday the team hopes to have Nwosu back by the end of the season that has 11 games remaining after Thursday.
The Seahawks were without Riq Woolen. The 2022 Pro Bowl cornerback missed the game with sprained ankle. Macdonald said next week after the team’s three-day break this weekend will determine if Woolen can play in Seattle’s next game, Oct. 20 at Atlanta.
The Seahawks used Nwosu’s newly open roster spot to sign veteran cornerback Artie Burns to the active roster from the practice squad for the game. He was the primary nickel defensive back on the third defensive play for Seattle, keeping starting cornerbacks Devon Witherspoon and Tre Brown outside.
Defensive tackle Byron Murphy was inactive. The rookie first-round draft choice missed his third consecutive game with an ankle injury.
Seattle’s other inactive players Thursday night were backups: linebacker Trevis Gipson, center Olu Oluwatimi, guard Sataoa Laumea, wide receiver Dareke Young and defensive end Myles Adams.
Cam Young returns
The Seahawks activated nose tackle Cam Young off the physically-unable-to-perform list to play against the 49ers. Young was Seattle’s fourth-round pick in 2023 from Mississippi State. He played in 16 of 17 games in his rookie season, mostly on special teams. He played only 18% of defensive snaps for the team last season.
Before activating Young, 12th-year veteran Johnathan Hankins was the only true nose tackle on Seattle’s active roster.
